Patient Care Tech: FULL TIME

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Med-Surg Nurses' Aide provides direct non-professional nursing care to patients of all age groups admitted to the Med-Surg Unit by following the direction of their assigned nurses in accordance with Hiawatha Community Hospital policy and procedures.

SHIFT DAYS/HOURS:

Days: 7 am - 7 pm. Nights: 7 pm - 7am; Days dependent upon individual schedule. Weekend and Holiday rotation required. Subject to change based on business necessity

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Must be a minimum of 16 years of age. High School diploma or GED equivalent, preferred.

Experience: At least one year of experience or comparable on-the-job training, required..

Certificates, License, Registrations: Certified Nursing Assistant certification, preferred. BLS certification, required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities: Must have comprehensive, timely knowledge of nurses' aide practice and must be able to

apply that knowledge in various situations, ranging from routine to emergent. The Nurse

Aide must be able to accept delegation from other staff. Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality.

Physical: Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds occasionally or 10 to 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:

To reduce job hazards, this position is responsible for wearing PPE during job functions. PPE can include: gloves, gown/coat, mask, shoe covers, head/face, and eye and ear protection. Each job function requires a different level of PPE, individuals receive initial and annual training to identify the appropriate level of PPE required. This position is classified Class I by OSHA and is exposed to odors, infectious microorganisms, and bodily fluids.

EQUIPMENT USED:

The nurse aide must obtain the knowledge and ability to utilize the vital sign machines, blood pressure equipment, thermometers, pulse oximeters, heating pad, sequential compression devices, sit to stand lift, electronic bed Scale, standard bed scale, stand-up weight scale, bed pans, bed side commode, shower chair, mobile bed and chair alarms and ability to set up suction and 02 as directed. Ability to utilize all the functions on the electronic beds including bed alarms. The nurse aide must have the knowledge and ability to launch the applications on the EMR for documentation of vital signs, intake and output, patient supply charging and rounding on their assigned patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assists the nurse with maintaining patients' physical and emotional comfort and hygiene.
  1. Assists the nurse in meeting the patients' dietary needs.
  1. Assists the nurse with recording intake and output in the EMR.
  1. Obtains and records vital signs in the EMR and reports abnormal vitals to the nurse as required.
  1. Assists the nurse in preventing and treating patients' skin integrity problems.
  1. Assists the nurse with admissions, dismissals, and transfers of patients.
  1. Performs duties delegated by the assigned nurse, charge nurse, and Nurse Manager. Effectively carries out delegated duties and responsibilities.
  1. Cleans work areas as assigned by the Charge Nurse and or Nurse Manager. Complete all checklists as required according to delegation by the Charge Nurse and or Nurse Manager.
  1. Collaborates with nursing team to ensure that hourly rounding and needed patient interventions are performed, per scope of practice, on all bedded patients. Accurate charting of interventions and rounding should be completed in a timely manner within the hospital EMR.
  1. Maintains equipment in good working order and reports malfunctions to the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager.
  1. Utilizes supplies and equipment efficiently and cost effectively. Assure all chargeable items are charged utilizing the EMR scanning capabilities:
  • Correctly and routinely scans chargeable items used per patient into inventory system
  • Maintains accurate and fiscally responsible count of supplies needed for the Med/Surg department. Reports concerns with inventory immediately to ensure charges are not being missed.
  1. Communicates concerns, needs, and any other work-related issues utilizing the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager.
  1. Assists with orientation of new Med-Surg employees and excels in conveying knowledge to others during the orientation process.
  1. May be required to train and float to other nursing departments.
  1. Continual surveillance and proactive participation in ongoing Infection Prevention and Control measures in accordance with policies located in the Infection Control Manual on MCN.
  1. Other duties as assigned.
