Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

Student Affairs provides essential programs and services that encourage and support academic success and personal growth for more than 29,500 students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs at the University. These programs and services challenge and enable students to become compassionate and responsible citizens and leaders on the campus and in local and global communities through an inclusive, culturally diverse and growth-centered campus environment. Student Affairs includes 17 departments, more than 325 full- and part-time professionals, and over 800 student workers who work together daily with campus administrators, faculty, and students to foster an environment of student learning and success.

Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC-Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.The Director of Student Affairs Assessment position’s primary goal is to leverage data to promote student success, continuous improvement, and intentional resource allocation. The director provides leadership for advancing a culture of evidence of student learning and development by way of systematic research and assessment of programs and services throughout Student Affairs. The director provides leadership, coordination and technical expertise for program evaluation, strategic planning, outcomes assessment, data management, and research efforts in support of the mission and vision of Student Affairs, including its signature co-curricular initiative – The Curricular Approach. The director works with individual units to prepare and execute assessment initiatives, maximize the continuous improvement of programs and services, and to optimize student learning outcomes within the co-curriculum. The director works with campus partners outside Student Affairs who are concerned with student learning and the Carolina student experience to gather and share data and research. The director leads efforts for setting assessment priorities for Student Affairs in collaboration with the senior leadership, produces the Student Affairs annual report, and chairs the Student Affairs Assessment Council (SAAC) and Curricular Approach Steering Committee. This position supports the division’s role in accreditation. The Director serves within the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement, and is a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

- Experience with collecting, analyzing, and using data to improve and enhance outcomes for students. – Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research designs and methodologies to assess student-learning outcomes. – Knowledge of appropriate technology in data management, statistical software applications and the visual presentation of data.- Experience with summarizing complex analysis of data and tailoring the presentation of results based on the target audience.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

- Five (5) or more years of experience in assessment in a higher education/student affairs setting. – High proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint. – Pleasant, helpful manner of working with people to build capacity for assessment. – Flexible, self-motivated, and willing to take initiative. – Excellent communication and organizational skills. – Strong problem solving, decision-making, and goal setting skills. – Demonstrated use of good judgment. Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently with minimal direction, and interest in student life issues. – Experience working with diverse undergraduate and graduate/professional student, faculty, or staff communities, which reflect an array of ethnic, racial, cultural, faith, gender, and other identities. – Experience with student engagement and assessment platforms, such as Campus Labs/Baseline, Campus Groups, Tableau, and Qualtrics.
