Director of Development and Marketing

We seek a full time Director of Development and Marketing. This position reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, execution and oversight of promotion, communication, and fundraising activities of the shelter. 

Job Summary:As a key member of the SARL Leadership team, The Director of Development and Marketing has primary responsibility for all fundraising events for the shelter and overall responsibility for marketing materials, social media and web content.  This position has significant responsibility in managing press releases and all other external communications.

Donor Development:
  • Develop relationships with new/existing donors.
  • Identify key community leaders, high dollar donors, animal lovers, promote SARL.
  • Periodic outreach to existing donors.
  • Identify ways to incorporate donor appreciation such as VIP breakfasts/lunch/dinner, recognition awards.
  • Assist/work with board members to identify and develop relationships with major donors.
  • Create and maintain donor database.
  • Develop Planned Giving System.
  • Develop Membership Giving System.
  • Systemize mailing lists: Little Green Light, PetPoint, Newsletter/Annual mailer.
  • Attend Development workshops/webinars for professional development.
  • Plan, manage, and execute special events and fundraising opportunities.
  • Identify and secure sponsorship for major fundraisers/events.

Grants:
  • Identify new grant opportunities.
  • Create and manage grant calendar.
  • Manage external grant writing resources and/or write grants.
  • Create and maintain grant application database and provide status report to ED monthly.

Identify and Develop SARL Success Stories:
  • Successful adoptions, animals SARL has medically ‘saved,’ people who have created generous support campaigns, etc.
  • Create annual appeal/i.e. holiday cards and help plan and execute fundraisers.
  • Develop annual SARL video with testimony from volunteers, animal adopters, program participants, etc. to be shown at annual fundraisers, to major donors, posted on web, etc.

Public Relations/Communications:
  • Identify potential media/publicity stories, communicate them through: Press Releases, Facebook, Twitter, SARL YouTube Channel.
  • Develop NH and national media contact list, including bloggers.
  • Create Media Book, press clippings, etc.
  • Create/Edit Newsletter.
  • Identify advertising opportunities.
  • Attend events, photograph or coordinated with photographer to maintain images from events.
  • Partner with Executive Director as shelter spokesperson.
  • Promote Shelter Image/Messaging.
  • Develop image standard for all SARL material, i.e. brochures, Website, flyers.
  • Assist with promotion/press/advertising for fundraisers/events.
  • Leverage and utilize volunteers with experience to execute directives.
 Website Management:
  • Ensure web content is updated and secure.
  • Create and solicit content i.e. Video/SARL You tube Channel, Blog, Advertisements, E- Newsletter.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Assist in development and support of shelter direction.
  • Serve as shelter liaison with Town of Salem.
  • Expand/Promote Existing SARL Programs.
  • Promote and oversee community outreach programs: therapy cat/dog visits to senior centers/homes, children’s homes, hospitals, schools, etc.
  • Promote Reading to Animal program.
  • Promote onsite events.

Requirements:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Passion for the humane treatment of animals and issues relating to animal welfare.
  • Fundraising and event planning.
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated success in a nonprofit environment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and is self-motivated.
  • Able to work flexible hours, which may include weekends.
  • Ability to communicate effectively including verbal, writing and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to manage a team.
  • Computer literacy with knowledge and or ability to learn office applications i.e. Google Apps, PetPoint, QuickBooks, Little Green Light, MaxGiving other applications as required.
  • Ability to conduct meetings in person or virtual settings.
  • Proven ability to create and execute an annual budget.
  • Excellence in customer service skills.

Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Animal shelter or similar organization.
