Assistant General Counsel

Provides legal advice and serves as in-house counsel to Strategic Education on a wide variety of matters.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Primary responsibility for negotiating and drafting a variety of contracts such as agreements with vendors, consultants, technology providers, employees, and corporate clients/alliances.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including internal subject matter experts and business leaders, during contract review process.
- Contribute to management and optimization of a contract review process that ensures comprehensive review to protect Company’s interests while also ensuring speed and efficiency.
- Assist with litigation and administrative proceedings involving contracts and commercial disputes.
- Investigate legal issues and recommend action, primarily related to the Company’s contractual obligations.
- Assist with general corporate matters.
- Provides legal and compliance training to in-house clients.
- Excellent analytical, oral, and written communications skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong computer/word processing skills, including knowledge of standard Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability and willingness to apply independent judgment in a dynamic environment.
- At least three years of experience in the practice of law.
- Experience in negotiating/drafting contracts preferred.
- Experience with contract management software preferred.
- Experience with SaaS contracts preferred.
- Higher education experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree and JD from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Bar admission in one or more of the following jurisdictions: Virginia, Minnesota, Maryland, or Washington, DC.
- Must be able to travel 10% of the time.
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
- Typical office setting.
- Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor.
- Travel via plane, car, and metro may be required to perform this job.
- Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant.
- Access information using a computer.
- Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.
- Effectively cope with stressful situations.
- Strong mental acuity.
- Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.
- Other essential functions and marginal job functions are subject to modification.
