Editorial Director, AI Initiative

Hearst Newspapers (HNP) is hiring an Editorial Director, AI Initiatives who is passionate about local journalism, media technology, reader service and responsible development that harnesses artificial intelligence and machine learning. In this role, the successful candidate will lead newsroom-focused AI initiatives, including building immersive reader experiences and internal tools for journalists, and working with editorial and executive leadership on strategies that enhance our newsrooms’ coverage of local communities and transform the way audiences discover our journalists’ work.

In partnership with HNP’s editorial leadership teams, the director will help define how AI is used in our news products, build a small, agile team of developer-journalists focused on AI development, manage a flexible roadmap, and launch editorial products that reinforce value and ensure reader trust in our newsrooms.

The role will work with HNP’s DevHub, a team of developers, computational journalists, digital designers and content strategists who collaborate with local newsrooms such as the San Francisco Chronicle, Houston Chronicle and Times Union of Albany, N.Y., to create best-in-class digital experiences. The DevHub has built tools and products such as Producer-P, an audience optimization tool; Dispatch, a newsletter assistant; Radar, an automated-alert system; and Chowbot, our first user-facing generative AI-powered chatbot that recommends restaurants to readers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The team’s latest work includes Assembly, a public-meeting monitoring system, and Emcee, a quiz-generation tool.

The Skillset

Ideal candidates will be able to showcase some of the following. We do not expect candidates to be proficient in every area.

  • Newsroom experience, preferably as an editor, news product leader or content strategist.
  • Deep understanding of modern news publishing trends and the media landscape.
  • Track record of generative AI development, including but not limited to creation of chatbots, extraction of structured data from unstructured sources, implementation of generative AI to existing workflows, etc.
  • Collaborative mindset and a willingness to learn from all types and levels of engineers, journalists, product thinkers and executive leadership.
  • Ability to self-manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, meeting tight deadlines without compromising on quality.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and persuasively to diverse stakeholders.
  • A high-level understanding of what large language models can do — and their limitations. You don’t need to be a computer scientist.
  • Proficiency: prompt engineering; Git and GitHub; LangChain and LangSmith; vector databases.
  • Plus: Comfort with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and relevant code libraries.
  • Plus: Familiarity with AWS and Docker

The Responsibilities

  • Lead ideation and development of AI-powered reader experiences.
  • Manage a team of developer-journalists focused on AI and automation.
  • Manage development of AI-powered tools that help newsrooms produce high-quality local journalism and grow their audiences.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest developments in generative AI and how they can affect media companies.
  • Maintain and communicate newsroom AI initiative roadmap.
  • Work with newsroom leadership on how AI is used in news products.
  • Commitment to journalistic ethics and standards, ensuring AI initiatives uphold the integrity and trustworthiness of our newsrooms.
  • Collaborate with DevHub and executive leadership team, promoting an inclusive culture and desire to push for innovation benefitting local news audiences.

If you’re passionate about ambitious local journalism, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We know there are many great candidates who may not check all of these boxes.
