Summary/Objective:

Conflicts Staff Counsel works under the direct supervision of the firm’s Deputy General Counsel to assist the firm with loss prevention efforts. This position also performs various legal research and writing projects to support the firm’s lawyers on litigation matters.


Responsibilities:

  • Works collaboratively with the firm’s Conflicts Analyst to evaluate all incoming matters for conflicts-related issues and ensure that conflicts are analyzed and handled in accordance with the applicable rules of professional conduct.
  • Involved in all aspects of new matter opening, including but not limited to, data entry, conflicts analysis, and evaluation of engagement letters and other administrative paperwork.
  • Is a critical support function for the firm’s Office of General Counsel and loss prevention team.
  • Assists with conflict clearance for lateral hires, onboarding of new hires, and training for firm attorneys and staff.
  • Central role in the firm’s management of case-related data and overall data integrity.
  • Must have meaningful experience with legal writing in litigation matters and conducting legal research on Westlaw.
  • Expected to devote approximately 30-40% of their time to billable research and writing projects, which may include dispositive motions, discovery motions, pre-trial motions, and legal research memoranda, predominately in support of the firm’s legal malpractice group

Qualifications:

  • License to practice law in Colorado
  • Admitted to the practice of law for a minimum of 10 years
  • A minimum of seven years as a practicing litigator
  • A minimum of seven years directly practicing in the area of legal ethics
  • Extensive knowledge of the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct
  • Basic knowledge of the ethics rules that apply to lawyers outside the state of Colorado
  • First-hand experience with regulation of lawyers
  • Experience with litigation-related legal writing, including but not limited to dispositive motions, discovery motions, and pre-trial motions.
  • Working knowledge of Westlaw


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., including lunch hour. This is a full time position working from our Denver office. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the hourly pay rate when the employee works more than 40 hours in a Sunday through Saturday work week.


Travel

Travel is limited and primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be needed to attend conferences or other professional functions.


Salary Range: $76 - $80 per hour. The final salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Additionally, the firm provides standard benefits including health insurance, 401(k) contribution, and paid time off, with annual bonus potential based on firm performance.
