ZACH is a non-profit organization that creates intimate theatre experiences that ignite the imagination, inspire the spirit, and engage the community. The Lead Scenic Carpenter works with the Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, and Scene Shop Supervisor to build all set pieces for ZACH Productions, upholding the artistic integrity of the Scenic Studios. For this role, building scenery includes carpentry, welding, and working with plastics, fabrics, or other materials. The Lead Scenic Carpenter supports all changeovers for ZACH Productions and leads over hire on project-based assignments as determined by shop leadership.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Construct scenery and set pieces as instructed by the Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, and Scene Shop Supervisor
  • Lead crew on specific projects or operations without direct supervision
  • Install scenery on stage, including mechanically moving, stationary, and flying pieces
  • Execute complicated and standard rigging solutions under the guidance of the Technical Direction and Scenic Studios leadership
  • Assist in the installation of stage automation equipment
  • Prepare the area around the stage; this could include special railings, seat installation, and other duties pertaining to any specific production
  • Participate in the strike of the set at the end of the performance run
  • Assist other departments as time and production allow
  • Cleaning up after performing specific duties and working with the scenic team to ensure shop cleanliness
  • Perform maintenance and organization of stock scenery, scenery carts, road kits, and other scenic resources at the direction of the Scenic Studios Supervisor
  • Participates in all Daily Stand Ups and procedural meetings called by Shop Leadership
  • Special Events: At the direction of the Technical Director, provide general production support for all ZACH special events
  • Rental Program: Support technical needs of the facility rental program

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 Years of Professional Carpentry, Welding, or a combination of education and work experience that yields the required skills and abilities.
  • Valid Driver’s License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge of foam materials and how to work with them
  • Ability to prioritize projects to ensure a project's greatest business and artistic value is being delivered
  • Basic understanding of geometric and mathematic principals
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of hand, power, and industrial tools
  • Knowledge of PPE and commonly used safety equipment
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment
  • Willingness to operate forklifts after in-house certification
  • Ability to guide and lead others in complex work
  • Willingness to drive panel vans and 24’ box trucks
  • Broad knowledge of carpentry tools and techniques
  • Broad knowledge of Metal working tools and techniques
  • Broad knowledge of rigging hardware and applications
  • Ability to understand construction drawings and execute them
  • Ability to work as a team member and maintain a positive attitude in times of stress
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to perform all work with a direct reflection of the vision, mission, and values of ZACH Theatre

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This is an on-site, campus-based role. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.   • Ability to lift, push, pull, or otherwise maneuver up to 70 lbs. repeatedly, either alone or with assistance.
  • Comfortable working in non- climate-controlled areas
  • Comfortable working on ladders, mechanical lifts, or other high places
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces
  • Must have reliable transportation and the ability to work with a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends as scheduled
  • The noise level in this work environment is typically moderate and can be high

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Scenic Shop Supervisor

Supervises (if any): None

Supports: Production

Peer collaboration/communicates with: TD, ATD, Scenic Shop Supervisor, Scenic Charge and Artisan, Props Manager, Props Artisan, Carpenters, and Overhire.


This is a full-time, non-exempt position.
