POSITION: CERTIFIED SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR

SUMMARY OF DUTIES
A CSAC will provide counseling services to patients with substance abuse addiction problems within the scope of their certification and under the supervision of a licensed substance abuse treatment practitioner (LSATP), licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed professional counselor (LPC), licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), or other mental health professionals licensed by the Virginia Department of Health Professions.
The scope of practice for a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor is defined in § 54.1-3507.1, which states that: “A certified substance abuse counselor shall be (i) qualified to perform, under appropriate supervision or direction, the substance abuse treatment functions of screening, intake, orientation, the administration of substance abuse assessment instruments, recovery and relapse prevention planning, substance abuse treatment, case management, substance abuse or dependence crisis intervention, client education, referral activities, record keeping, and consultation with other professionals; (ii) qualified to be responsible for client care of persons with a primary diagnosis of substance abuse or dependence; and (iii) qualified to supervise, direct and instruct certified substance abuse counseling assistants. Certified substance abuse counselors shall not engage in independent or autonomous practice.”
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, Psychology, Counseling or in an approved related field required.
- One year of Behavioral Health/Substance Use Disorder experience required.
- Current certification as a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC/CSAC-S) by Board of Counseling or expected to meet this requirement within 45 days of hiring is required.
- Excellent writing and communication skills as well as an ability to work with a variety of people in providing the highest level of therapeutic counseling services.
- Regular and predictable attendance and regularly meet client counseling requirements for clinical services.
- Must be able to successfully pass State, Federal, and Central Registry background reviews.
