GENERAL SUMMARY: The Dental Hygienist is a licensed oral health professional whose work is to plan, conduct and promote preventive oral health programs in the community. The incumbent assesses oral health needs of the community, mobilizes community partnerships, increases access to dental care, and provides dental hygiene programs. Individuals assigned to this position are expected to apply a thorough knowledge of public health dental hygiene practices and concepts to work situations. This is a 30-hour part-time position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Makes referrals, utilizes community dental resources appropriately, and acts as advocate as needed.
  • Plans and conducts dental hygiene programs for geographic location and/or population based on assessed needs.
  • Prepares reports and/or statistical data as needed.
  • Assists in orientation of new staff to oral health program.
  • Assesses the oral health status of community, especially populations with increased risk of dental disease.
  • Assesses community access to preventive and therapeutic dental care.
  • Develops and sustains community partnerships and a coalition with dental, health and social service providers, school systems and residents of Benton and Franklin counties to address oral health issues and increase access to dental care.
  • Provides oral health education and consultation to children, parents, providers and decision makers.
  • Represents public health perspective in oral health policy development.
  • Performs and documents Medicaid Administrative Match activities per the Medicaid Administrative Match training Manual for LHJ's.
  • Participate in Department emergency response trainings and drills; aid in response to emergency situations and summon other health care
  • providers and emergency personnel in a timely and appropriate manner when necessary.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance activities as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of public health dental hygiene practices and concepts.
  • Knowledge and skill to plan, coordinate and conduct dental hygiene programs.
  • Knowledge of health care maintenance and prevention.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical record-keeping procedures.
  • Knowledge of health and social services and resources.
  • Skill in maintaining and establishing working relationships with community resources.
  • Skill in performing a number of tasks simultaneously.
  • Skill in working as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Skill in meeting deadlines and working under time constraints.
  • Communication skills (oral and written) including the ability to read, write and converse in the English language.
  • Problem-solving and motivational interviewing skills.
  • Record-keeping skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in working with racially, ethnically and socio-economically diverse populations.

The Requirements & Selection Process

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a two-year dental hygiene program
  • A minimum of two years of recent (within 5 years) dental hygiene clinical experience
  • Licensed as a Dental Hygienist in the State of Washington
  • Current Washington State Driver's License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene from an accredited school supplemented by a minimum of two years of recent (within 5 years) dental hygiene clinical experience.
  • Fluency in a foreign language/culture is desirable.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Performance of job duties requires driving on a regular basis, a valid Washington State driver's license, the use of the incumbent's personal motor vehicle when a District fleet vehicle is not available for use, and proof of appropriate auto insurance.
