The Scene Shop Supervisor is expected to manage the day to day operations of the Scene Shop, under the direction of the Technical Director, and assist the Technical Director in the on time completion of all Scenic Responsibilities. The Supervisor shall also maintain and oversee shop inventory including our FIFO Materials program with the ATD and TD. The Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all production tools and equipment at the Scenic Studios and maintain and facilitate safety training programs under the direction of the TD. The Supervisor shall serve as the primary compliance officer for workplace safety in day to day operations at the Scenic Studios, under the direction of the TD. The Supervisor serves as a critical member of shop leadership and, as such, shall comport themselves with professionalism in all aspects of their duties.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage the daily operations of the scene shop including materials inventory, consumables procurement, and adherence to production time lines; this includes the opening and closing of the ZACH Scenic Studios in accordance with SOPs outlined in the Scenic Studios Handbook regarding tools, equipment, and security protocols
  • Oversee all shop staff safety training
  • Accountable for the safe operation of all equipment, tools, and other work practices in the day to day operations of the Scenic Studios
  • Serves as lead stage automation mechanic under the guidance of the TD
  • Assist the ATD and TD in labor estimates during the bid process
  • Assist with Drafting as schedule and need allows under the guidance of the TD
  • Responsible for creating Build Schedules and maintaining the shop schedule under the direction of the Technical Director
  • Responsible for on time completion of scenery construction
  • Responsible for the repair and maintenance necessary on any shop equipment and tools
  • Ability to understand Construction Drawings and explain their relation to the finished product
  • Act as primary Quality Control assessor in all scenery prior to sending to the Paints Shop; discuss variances and challenges with TD and ATD to determine appropriate recourse
  • Communicate issues that arise in the Shop to the Technical Director
  • Assist in the acquisition of scenic materials
  • Maintain inventory of all Scenery or scenic units stored at the Scenic Studios
  • Serve as mentor, trainer, and educator to all scene shop staff
  • Serve as key leadership in changeovers and load ins between fabrication shops and stage operations, including direction of over hire, as needed
  • Shop Supervisor may be required to fill in as Technical Director in the absence of the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director for key meetings, rehearsals, or performances
  • Assist with the coordination of Scenery, Stage Operations, A/V, and Lighting Departments with the Technical Director
  • Required to attend technical rehearsals at TD’s direction and on-call during tech weekend
  • Support all ZACH Production departments and initiatives as assigned by the Technical Director

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor Degree in Technical Theatre or a combination of education and work experience that yields the required skills and abilities.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a regional theatre
  • Extensive experience and training with Stage Automation
  • Demonstrated competence in theatrical rigging

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, manage personnel, projects and multitask
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, AutoCAD, Google Apps/ Web based Services.
  • Demonstrated advance knowledge of theatrical scenery construction techniques in woodworking, metal working, and alternative materials/techniques such as foam, plastic, and casting
  • Ability to maintain a Safe working Environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AC and DC power supplies including single and three phase.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theatrical automation.
  • Ability to assess and problem solve issues in the scene shop.
  • Maintain a clean and organized Scene Shop.
  • Driver’s License and the ability or willingness to be trained to operate a forklift and drive a cargo van and 24’ box truck
  • Willingness to be certified as competent trainer for Forklift Training Program

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This is an on-site, campus-based role. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.   • Ability to lift, push, pull or otherwise maneuver up to 70 lbs repeatedly, either alone or with assistance
  • Must have reliable transportation and the ability to work with a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends as scheduled
  • Comfortable working on ladders, mechanical lifts or other high places
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces
  • Comfortable operating forklifts
  • Comfortable operating 24’ Box Trucks
  • Required to work nights and weekends as TD determines to support Production
  • Comfortable with theatrical rigging, mechanics, and automation.
  • The noise level in this work environment is typically moderate and can be high
