New Orleans, United States Audubon Institute Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

Position Title: Assistant Stranding Coordinator

Department: Audubon Aquarium Rescue

Reports To: Stranding and Rehab Coordinator

Location: Lake Charles, LA

General Summary: Under the general direction of the Stranding and Rehab Coordinator, the Assistant Stranding Coordinator will assist the Stranding and Rehab Coordinator with the response, rescue, and release activities for Audubon Aquarium Rescue (AAR). This position is based at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana and will primarily focus on marine mammal stranding response in Southwest Louisiana.

The Assistant Stranding Coordinator will be responsible for conducting beach surveys for active stranding surveillance along Southwest Louisiana beaches, lab and field necropsies of marine mammals, completing and uploading all essential paperwork associated with stranding and necropsies into national databases, supervising interns from McNesse State University, coordinating the AAR volunteer corps in the area as needed, representing Audubon at various outreach and education opportunities around the Gulf Coast, as well as help cover calls for the AAR 24 hour stranding hotline.

The Assistant Stranding Coordinator candidate should be aware that historically the incidences of live marine mammal and sea turtle rescues and transport to rehab occur infrequently. Live animal rescues and rehabilitation events are rare and unpredictable and should be considered be a minor, but important, part of the position.

This is a 3-year full-time (funding dependent) position with full benefits. This position will operate fairly independently from the rest of the AAR team, who are located in New Orleans, LA. Due to the unpredictable nature of stranding response work, travel (mostly in state), weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts may be required.

To deliver on the Audubon mission, the Assistant Stranding Coordinator will:

• Help maintain partnerships with regional stranding network programs

• Assist with training of McNesse State University interns and AAR volunteers in proper techniques of stranding response; investigate and record strandings and sightings of animals reported by public or wildlife agencies; forward stranding information to appropriate federal agencies

• Assist with the expansion of network volunteers to assist in stranding situations in Southwest Louisiana

• Build and maintain relationships with state and local agencies and community organizations in the area

Educate our diverse audience about the natural world.

• Help develop educational materials about marine mammals and strandings in Louisiana

• Interact with the public regarding beached animals and provide verbal/hard-copy information on AAR and the public’s role in stranding reporting.

• Represent Audubon and AAR at various local, national, and international meetings

Enhance the care and survival of wildlife through research and conservation

• Assist with data and sampling collection pertaining to stranded marine mammals and sea turtles

• Enter all appropriate paperwork data into national databases and Ceto

• Salvage appropriate carcasses

• Move carcasses off public beaches, as needed

• Perform marine mammal necropsies

• Obtain and process tissue samples of stranded dead/live animals

• Maintain sample database for frozen and fixed samples

• Maintain organization of necropsy laboratory and supply inventory

• Answer all calls made to the AAR Stranding Hotline, communicate with necessary staff and agencies, and respond to instances when required

• Document survey activities, including maintaining electronic logs

• Operate survey vehicles along Cameron area beaches

• Maintain survey vehicles, including daily washing and reporting mechanical deficiencies

• Report inventory of field supplies used for surveys and related activities daily

• Weekly deep cleaning of survey vehicles

• Weekly check-in meeting with AAR New Orleans team

• Respond to live strandings of marine mammals and sea turtles

Operate a financially self-sufficient collection of museums and parks

• Strive to operate within budget

The above listed duties are general statements of required major duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. They do not exclude other duties as assigned.
