Summary Job Description:

Providing supportive services to families who are on the path to reunification; focusing on preparations for the child’s homecoming to allow for a smoother transition and the creation of stronger bonds, resulting in permanency. Collaborating with the case worker to provide intensive support to reunifying families and throughout the trial discharge period.

Parent/Visit Coach will provide services to families both in our Brooklyn and Queens Offices. Performs both field and office work in handling case work activities for the agency. The employee may be required to use his or her own vehicle in carrying out field assignments. Work involves gathering information and providing services to meet clients' needs, focusing on permanency planning, counseling individuals, and transmitting information on cases through completion of agency and governmental documents.  Work is reviewed through conferences with the Foster Care Director.


Principle Responsibilities:

The Parenting/Visiting Coach will work individually with parents and collaboratively with case planners to provide supportive services to including but not limited to:

  • Provide visit coaching services for parents who are struggling with engagement
  • Coach in making the home a safe and child friendly environment
  • Model age-appropriate methods of discipline with parents
  • Plan and organizing family activities and allocating time for each child
  • Attend Service Plan meetings and case conferences focused on readiness for trial discharge
  • Model appropriate behavior and response in situations that might be stressful and/or frustrating to parents
  • Attend Service Planning Meetings and case conferences focused on readiness for trial discharge
  • Collaborate with case planners in making weekly and/or bi-weekly contacts to assess specific needs and address family-identified needs
  • All progress notes to be recorded online in Connections by the caseworker.
  • Every action or event must be recorded by the caseworker no later than 72 hours after the action or event and must be forwarded to the immediate supervisor for review. Actions/events include, but are not limited to:
  • The director must review the progress notes, to determine clarity, no later than 5 days after it was received from the worker.  If acceptable, the supervisor will approve the progress note and it becomes final.  If the progress note is not clear, the supervisor must meet with the caseworker.  The caseworker must make the necessary corrections and return the corrected progress note to the supervisor for further review. The corrections must be submitted to the Supervisor, no later than 3 days after the supervisor requested the corrections. The supervisor must review the corrected progress note no later than 3 days after it is received.
  • When a caseworker is going on vacation, progress notes for all events must be submitted to supervisor by 5:00 PM, 2 weekdays before vacation begins.
  • The Director will monitor the timeliness of progress notes and the review process.
  • Caseworkers, Supervisors, Directors, and Secretaries will attend all mandated trainings regarding case recording.
  • Director will schedule weekly conferences with worker to specifically discuss each case and to review caseworkers’ interventions.


Special Qualifications: 

  • Good knowledge of the principles and practices of social casework.
  • Good knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations governing the care and treatment of children.
  • Experience related to services to families and children, preferably medical or child welfare related
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively provide direction and counseling to clients and maintain all required documentation.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with clients, relatives, and other individuals and to obtain and verify information needed through interviews and investigation.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive case records and to reach logical conclusions based on pertinent regulations and information.
  • Ability to actively listen and use basic problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to effectively teach positive parent-child interaction skills.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Ability to use a positive, strengths-based approach in working with families.
  • Ability to relate sensitively and without judgment to infants, young children and their families.
  • Ability to recognize and record significant individual and family behaviors.
  • Ability to assess parent/child relationships strengths and weaknesses.
  • Ability to intervene constructively on identified weaknesses/vulnerabilities in the parent/child relationship.
  • Knowledge of: Developmental, emotional, and cognitive needs of infants and toddlers
  • Knowledge of issues related to the effects of trauma
  • Knowledge of social issues as they relate to drug addiction, i.e., domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, unemployment,


Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field (Human Services, Psychology, or Sociology).


Travel Requirements:

  • This position is in Brooklyn with some travel to the other locations.
  • This is an hourly position and salary will be commensurate with experience
