SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director of Collections provides leadership, guidance, and expertise in the areas of collection and resource management and management for Systems, Collection Assessment, and Resource Acquisitions and Management (RAaM) Unit. S/he is responsible for managing the library's acquisitions budget and approval plan.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Assistant Director of Collections works collaboratively with department/unit heads, and the Office of Computing and Information Technology to affect user-oriented solutions related to library services, systems and software. S/he works collaboratively with subject liaisons on collection assessment and development and with the Archives Research Center on policy and procedures for special collections materials.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership, and articulations of a user-center, holistic collections vision to meet current and emerging information needs and new models of collection delivery, fiscal responsibility, information technology, assessment, and management (20%)
  • Provide strategic direction for the development of the Library’s technical services and collection assessment initiatives, including but not limited to, coordinating and prioritizing system-wide efforts, proposals and maintaining an overview of all technical services within the library (20%)
  • Serve as leader on internal committees to foster collegiate relationships and partnerships with other directors to ensure the mission and strategic initiatives of the library are attained, and that organizational policies and procedures are relevant and current. Represent the library on external committees at the request of the CEO/Library Director and others (15%)
  • Design, evaluate, review and adjust departmental workflows, policies, procedures, and assignments with attention to greater efficiency (10%)
  • Advise the Associate Director and/or CEO/Library Director with respect to best practices and innovation in collection initiatives and technical services (10%)
  • Responsible for staff management including but not limited to making recommendations for changes, training and motivation, inputting payroll data, conducting ongoing, and annual performance evaluation (10%)
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and assessment of library services, policies, procedures, and publications (5%)
  • Responsible for compilation of required external library assessment data, accreditation, and annual reporting in collaboration with Associate Director and Director of PAC on the publication and distribution of the organization’s collections data (5%)
  • Other duties as assigned (5%)

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE:

  • Knowledge of electronic resource licensing principles and practices
  • Demonstrated ability for strategic thinking, embracing change, risk taking, collaborative working, and thinking beyond the internal library organizational structure to identify and support stakeholder needs
  • Data-informed decision-making skills
  • Ability to set, prioritize, and attain goals in support of the organization’s strategic goals
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems as used by technical services and collections management units, including statistical and fund maintenance, proxy servers, reporting functions, and the structure and management of online catalogs
  • Knowledge of MARC and non-MARC metadata standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, or METS
  • Ability to lead in an atmosphere of continuous change, and to inspire and motivate within a collaborative and diverse atmosphere
  • Evidence of scholarship and/or professional activity
  • Ability to balance the pursuit of excellence with a spirit of collaboration
  • Capacity for successful leadership and/or participation on workplace teams
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library science
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in at least one of the following areas: acquisitions/cataloging, collection development, or serials and/or electronic resource management in an academic library
  • Minimum of five years’ supervisory experience with commitment to mentoring, training, and staff development
  • Record of innovation related to collection assessment,
  • Record of assessing collections based on data analysis and coordinate and guide the work of others
  • Experience with migration and management of library management systems
  • Experience of leading and coordination library selectors in collection management activities
  • Familiar with leading emerging and innovate projects related to collection and resource management
  • Familiarity with website structures and content systems
  • Progressive responsibility for supervision of personnel within technical services in an academic library
  • Demonstrated experience with emerging technologies, trends, standards and practices in academic library technical services and digital services environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional advanced degree
  • Demonstrated interest in management of Integrated Library Systems (ILS) functions including Worldcat Discovery Systems (WMS)
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to work collegially and productively with partners outside of the library.
