Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Deputy Director of Collections plays a pivotal role in steering the strategic direction of collection and resource management within the Systems, Collection Assessment, and Resource Acquisitions and Management (RAaM) Unit. This position is tasked with overseeing the library's budget for acquisitions and ensuring effective resource allocation.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Deputy Director collaborates closely with departmental leaders and the Office of Computing and Information Technology to create user-focused solutions that enhance library services, systems, and software. Additionally, this role works in partnership with subject liaisons to assess and develop collections, as well as with the Archives Research Center to establish policies and procedures for special collections.

KEY DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Providing visionary leadership and articulating a user-centered approach to collections that addresses current and future information needs, while considering fiscal responsibility and technological advancements (20%)
  • Setting strategic priorities for the library's technical services and collection assessment initiatives, including coordinating system-wide proposals and maintaining an overview of technical services (20%)
  • Leading internal committees to cultivate collaborative relationships with other directors, ensuring alignment with the library's mission and strategic goals, and representing the library on external committees as needed (15%)
  • Designing and refining departmental workflows, policies, and procedures to enhance operational efficiency (10%)
  • Advising senior leadership on best practices and innovations in collection initiatives and technical services (10%)
  • Managing staff responsibilities, including training, performance evaluations, and payroll input (10%)
  • Contributing to the development and assessment of library services, policies, and publications (5%)
  • Compiling required external library assessment data and collaborating on the publication of collections data (5%)
  • Performing additional duties as assigned (5%)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • In-depth knowledge of electronic resource licensing principles and practices
  • Proven ability to think strategically, embrace change, and collaborate effectively across organizational boundaries
  • Strong data-informed decision-making capabilities
  • Proficiency in setting and achieving goals aligned with the organization's strategic objectives
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems and their application in technical services and collections management
  • Understanding of MARC and non-MARC metadata standards
  • Capacity to lead in a dynamic environment and inspire collaboration within diverse teams
  • Evidence of professional engagement and scholarship
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution
  • At least five years of experience in acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, or electronic resource management in an academic library
  • A minimum of five years of supervisory experience with a focus on mentoring and staff development
  • Demonstrated innovation in collection assessment and data-driven decision-making
  • Experience in managing library management systems and leading collection management activities
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies and trends in academic library services

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Additional advanced degree
  • Interest in managing Integrated Library Systems functions
  • Ability to work collaboratively with external partners
