Job Title: Geomagnetism/Waveforms Database Analyst/Programmer - Intermediate

Client: US Geological Survey (USGS) – Geological Hazards Science Center (GHSC)

Citizenship: US or Green Card / Permanent Resident as long as they can pass a Background Investigation

The candidate will support the GHSC Geomagnetism Data Processing Support program with geomagnetic processing of data acquired from the 14 USGS magnetic observatories and from partner locations operated in cooperation with the USGS.

The candidate will have a degree in geophysics, physics, mathematics, and/or geology, an understanding of fundamental scientific and mathematical concepts, experience completing data quality control and analysis, experience with computer operation including the ability to use specialized software applications (including non-commercial, internally designed software), and the ability and skills to perform methodical tasks. Professional knowledge of and familiarity with geomagnetism, magnetism, electromagnetism, precision measurements, and/or experience in basic programming concepts (e.g., experience writing basic scripts or programs). Knowledge of waveform data/databases highly desirable.

The candidate will be required to report verbally on progress during weekly Geomagnetism Program operations meetings. Priorities and coordination of the work required will be discussed, and milestones will be established as needed. The candidate will solicit feedback, as needed, from Geomagnetism Program staff concerning assigned tasks and processes utilized. Processed data will be archived by the candidate as directed by Geomagnetism Program personnel. The candidate will also provide detailed documentation describing the processing methods used and any issues encountered while processing the observatory data.

The candidate will provide operational support to the USGS Geomagnetism Program by:

  • Completing weekly quality control assessment and cleaning of magnetic observatory timeseries data ensuring that the resulting data meet USGS Geomagnetism Program and/or INTERMAGNET data standards.
  • Completing monthly quasi-definitive data processing of USGS magnetic observatory timeseries data using specialized magnetic data processing software and ensuring that the resulting data meet USGS Geomagnetism Program and/or INTERMAGNET data standards prior to the last day of the month.
  • Completing yearly definitive data processing of USGS magnetic observatory timeseries data using specialized magnetic data processing software and ensuring that the resulting data meet USGS Geomagnetism Program and/or INTERMAGNET data standards by the due date (typically early July).
  • Checking and QC of absolute magnetic field measurements weekly to establish a baseline for data acquired from USGS magnetic observatories to ensure that data entries are error-free.
  • Processing/computing K-indices monthly from magnetic observatory data to meet USGS Geomagnetism Program and/or INTERMAGNET standards.
  • Creating new and/or modifying existing scripts/applications, as needed, to assist with processing and analyzing USGS magnetic observatory data.
  • The candidate will provide data and documentation related to Inalab’s processing to the Geomagnetism Program data by:
  • Submitting processed data for review to Geomagnetism Program personnel to ensure that the quality and time standards listed.
  • Documenting any settings, configurations, or procedures used to process any of the USGS Geomagnetism Program data.
  • Providing documentation for any scripts, codes, or configurations generated and/or modified.
  • Uploading all data and documentation generated to Geomagnetism Program server(s) following the time standards listed.
  • Providing support as required in the form of oral or written presentations and/or documentation at such places designated by the Government.
  • Follow and adhere to all documentation describing the standards, best practices, and/or the software used to complete the above tasks.

  • This is not a software development position, and any development tasks shall be a minor part of the overall job.
