Position Summary:

During the Fall 2024 Semester, Professors Jeff Nichols and Brent Olson will lead 13 students on a semester long road trip around the American West. The “Westminster Expedition: The American West” is designed as an exploration into the issues at the heart of the contemporary West. Students will earn 16 credits in environmental studies and history as they study Environmental Cooperation and Conflict, Landscape and Meaning, the Experiencing Public Lands, and the Indigenous West. This prolonged journey into the field will allow us to learn directly from landscapes and ecosystems, as well as from people who live, work, and study in those places. Together, we expect to build a cohort of impassioned scholars with a particular breadth and depth of experiential knowledge equipped to build a better future for the West.

The Program Assistant’s key role will be to work with Professors Nichols and Olson in the Leadership of the trip. This will include facilitating group development, helping to manage logistical details, managing potential group conflict, delivering/facilitating course content as applicable, and other duties as they arise over the course of the trip.

The program assistant will be expected to help with pre-trip packing, travel with the group from August 21-October 13 and from October 20-November 21, 2024. Lodging, food, and transportation on the Expedition will be covered.

The purpose of this position is to join the leadership team to provide support in the areas of program delivery, academics, group dynamics, logistics, program safety, and risk management on the Westminster Expedition: The American West. The Program assistant will assist faculty with logistical and leadership duties on the trip, including camp site maintenance and potential emergency management.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide logistical support for the Westminster Expedition, including help around camp, shopping, driving
  • Manage and provide support for group maintenance, may include one on one check-ins with students, group activities, conflict resolution, etc.
  • Work with faculty to deliver instructional content in their particular area of expertise
  • Assist with risk and emergency management as the need arises
  • Act as a liaison between students and faculty on the trip
  • Support the development and implementation of team-building activities to enhance group cohesion and communication
  • Assist in navigating and resolving interpersonal conflicts among participants to maintain a positive and productive group dynamic
  • Oversee equipment preparation and maintenance, ensuring all gear is in optimal condition for the duration of the trip


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. degree in: Environmental Studies, History, Outdoor Education and Leadership, or a related field
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and conflict management skills
  • Basic competence in camping skills and risk management in the outdoors 
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Nearly infinite reserves of positivity and energy
  • Current Wilderness First Aid Certification
  • Clean driving record and ability to become a certified driver through Westminster University

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current Wilderness First Responder Certification
  • Outdoor leadership experience on extended field trips
  • Experience building rapport with, mentoring, and supporting students

Job details:

Compensation of $1,066 per week, payable semi-monthly in accordance with Westminster University 's standard payroll practices, and subject to any deductions permitted under law.
Temporary Full-Time Benefited position: from August 18, 2024 to November 22, 2024 (13 weeks total).
