PURPOSES SPECIFIC TO THE POSITION

  • To set out degrees of apprenticeship from New Apprentice FSR through Apprentice 3 FSR, defining the scope of responsibilities of each and establishing standards for performance and promotion.
  • To provide a plan of development where under an employee may advance in an orderly manner through the various degrees of apprenticeship.

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to Supervisory and managerial staff within applicable engineering support group, as assigned.
  • Directs - none unless assigned.
  • Cooperates or coordinates with all persons both within and outside the Cooperative to the extent necessary to effectively carry out the duties of the position.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Ability to learn from technical manuals and on-the-job instruction is required. Knowledge of mathematics and other subject matter equivalent to high school graduation is required. Graduation from high school is preferred so that promotion to apprentice positions of higher degrees of responsibilities is possible. Amounts of time required to learn the practical application of specified knowledge to work problems and situations and to learn the necessary techniques, methods, practices, procedures, rules, use of forms and related matters vary and are progressive with promotions and advancement.

Requires ability and willingness to:

  • Work safely and comply with all rules, policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Operate and care for vehicles, equipment, mobile devices, etc. as assigned.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Lift light and medium loads frequently and assist with heavy loads occasionally.
  • Interact effectively with members and others from the public.
  • Work in a wide variety of positions and postures including but not limited to overhead, bending, sitting, standing, stooping, squatting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and twisting.
  • Work in a wide variety of environmental conditions including heat, cold, rain, etc. and walk on uneven or slick surfaces.
  • Maintain highest degree of confidentiality regarding all Cooperative, member, and employee information.
  • Work overtime as assigned.
  • Complete neat paperwork and maintain organized workspaces as assigned.
  • Work safely near certain electrical voltages as assigned and qualified and recognize hazards to avoid higher voltages.
  • Participate in occasional travel and overnight stays.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and focus.
  • Other specifications as assigned.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF WORK PERFORMED

  • To effectively carry out the design staking of all changes in the Cooperative's distribution system.

RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES AND REVIEW

  • New Apprentice Field Service Representative
    • Unless a person has demonstrated prior experience in staking, he/she will start as a New Apprentice FSR. The first six months of employment shall be considered solely as a learning type of job and the employee assists personnel of higher grade in performing routine instructions in specifications and staking sheets. Acquires a basic knowledge of electricity and becomes familiar with electric distribution and transmission layouts, related equipment and applicable provisions of various codes. Learns to make out staking sheets on routine jobs. Learns and practices first aid and CPR. At the completion of one year as New Apprentice FSR, the employee is eligible for promotion to the next degree of apprenticeship. Recommendation of the employee's immediate supervisor and department Vice President is required for such promotion. If, in the opinion of the supervisor and/or department Vice President, performance of the apprentice does not warrant promotion, he/she may be held as a New Apprentice FSR, with no increase in salary for, but not to exceed, an additional six months. Unless extenuating circumstances are present and evident, the inability of the New Apprentice FSR to qualify for promotion to the next degree of apprenticeship within one year should be considered as reason for terminating employment with the Cooperative.
  • Apprentice 1 FSR
    • During the second year, performs routine staking work efficiently under occasional supervision. Follows maps and routine instructions in specifications and staking sheets. Has a basic knowledge of electricity and is familiar with electric distribution and transmission layouts, related equipment, applicable specifications and provisions of various codes. At the completion of the second year's apprenticeship, a decision as set forth in paragraph A above shall be made as to promotion, retention for an additional six months or termination.
  • Apprentice 2 FSR
    • During the third year, continues building upon previous skills, abilities, and responsibilities while performing routine staking work with less supervision, and begins performing more advanced work under occasional supervision. At the completion of the third year's apprenticeship, a decision as set forth in paragraph A above shall be made as to promotion, retention for an additional six months or termination.
  • Apprentice 3 FSR
    • During the fourth year, the apprentice continues to execute and master additional functions expected of a Field Service Representative.
  • Each degree of apprenticeship has the responsibility for taking every opportunity to acquaint the members with the advantageous and productive uses of electricity and for obtaining increased member and public understanding and acceptance of the Cooperative's objectives, plans and programs and of electrification in Arkansas in general.
  • Each apprentice performs other duties as requested or required by the position.

It shall be the responsibility of the Vice President, Team Services to advise the Vice President, Engineering/Operations or the appropriate District Vice President not less than thirty (30) days before the end of each employee's degree of apprenticeship so the latter can so inform the appropriate supervisor and the review committee, if its recommendations are required, in time to decide on promotion, retention for an additional six months, transfer or termination.
