Job DescriptionJob DescriptionThe Senior Program Director, Ophthalmology, works under direct supervision of the General Manager (GM) and is responsible for building, directing and overseeing the execution and quality of scientific research related to ophthalmology across both the small animal and large animal programs, and will assure all scientific and technical processes and practices meet or exceed client needs. This position will direct the development, interpretation, implementation and achievement of short- and long-range ophthalmology objectives for the company, and will recommend and implement techniques and practices to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Responsible for ophthalmology oversight at the site.  Direct, maintain and strengthen client interactions relative to these capabilities.
  • Assure that the conduct of ophthalmic studies is in compliance with domestic and foreign expectations for discovery, with OSHA requirements, with USDA requirements, with FDA and with requirements of other agencies and groups.
  • Assure efficient coordination, support, and integration of operations.
  • Assist senior management team with the development and completion of all in-house projects designated for business development and continuous process improvement of the business unit.
  • Develop study protocols, IACUC protocols, and study timelines from statements of work provided by the Business Development unit.
  • Direct and oversee study performance, including data quality control.
  • Communicate with clients regarding protocol development, timeline, updates, data, and reports for their studies.
  • Develop short- and long-range operating objectives, integration initiatives, organizational structure, and staffing requirements in collaboration with management. 
  • Provides oversight of laboratory research and mentors technical staff in ophthalmic research, including method development and refinement, study-related problem resolution and technique validation.
  • Strategically plans and assesses on-going progress and recommends revisions to company goals based on evaluation results:
    • Determines the effectiveness, outcomes, risks and measurable impact of contract research program.
    • Collaborates with personnel relevant to short and long-term objectives of the company and participates in developing and establishing companywide policies.
    • Participates in client’s visits, which may include on-site or off-site presentations.
  • Works closely with the staff to promote an atmosphere of teamwork and enthusiasm, provides leadership in solving problems of all levels of complexity:
  • Responsible for the technical and professional growth of direct reports;
  • Participates in the interview and selection of qualified personnel;
  • Performs performance reviews, recommends salary changes.
  • Assure that effective communications are maintained within areas of responsibility.
  • Act within scope of authority and consistent with company and corporate objectives, guidelines, policies, and practices.
  • Recommend and implement techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices.
  • Keep abreast of current trends and practices in field of expertise. 
  • Serve as a contributing member of the IACUC or IBC.
  • Perform all other scientist duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
  • M.S. Degree or equivalent in life sciences or related field. Ph.D. preferred
  • Certifications preferred: ALAT, LAT, LATG, CMAR
  • Experience in management of research projects, supervisory and training experience to work with staff. With Master's Degree > 7 years. With Ph.D. > 5 years.
