Job Description

Technical lead position with focus on data storage technology development, process development and failure analysis by mainly analytical electron microscopy and advanced microanalysis. This position involves extensive direct customer interaction and requires capacity and willingness to provide thoughtful analysis to help solving problems in product design, process development and failure analysis. Intimate knowledge of and hands-on experience with electron microscopy and microanalysis are required for developing state-of-the-art applications and advancing industrial use of microscopy and microanalysis technology. Key responsibility is to provide advanced electron microscopy analysis to support data storage product and process development and failure analysis. Additional responsibilities may include management of capacity and utilization, strategic analytical capability roadmap development and execution, and customer education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Engage with customers in cross-functional groups and provide materials analysis expertise in understanding root causes and solving problems.
  • Manage customer experience by providing timely and solution oriented analysis.
  • Operate electron microscopes, perform microscopy and microanalysis, and process data to provide meaningful and thoughtful analysis.
  • Manage capacity, tool utilization and prioritize workflow to maximize efficiency.
  • Develop targeted applications to meet special analytical requirement or find solutions if no internal capabilities available.
  • Train junior engineers and technicians for microscope operation, data collection and analysis. Collaborate with internal teams for optimized failure analysis workflow.
  • Develop internal analytical capability roadmap, lead application development and equipment capability advancement to meet advanced development and failure analysis requirements.
  • Focal person between internal microscopy team and service support to achieve maximum up-time.
Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • Ph.D in Physical Science or Materials Science with focus on electron microscopy and microanalysis.
  • 5+ years full time hands-on operation of modern transmission electron microscopes with EELS, EDX, STEM, nano-beam diffraction.
  • 3+ years for proven track record of problem-solving experience.

SKILLS

  • Hands-on electronic device level failure analysis, project management.
  • Working knowledge of magnetic recording technology, data storage technology, magnetic materials, semiconductor materials and materials processing.
  • Focused ion beam technology, surface analysis, and chemical analysis.
  • Experience in MatLab, JMP, FEI, JEOL, Gatan, Oxford, Bruker, 3D tomography.

  • You will be eligible to participate in Western Digital’s Short-Term Incentive (STI) Plan, which provides incentive awards based on Company and individual performance.  Depending on your role and your performance, you may be eligible to participate in our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs) or cash equivalents, pursuant to the terms of the LTI plan.
