A medical lab technician is a highly skilled health professional who tests and analyzes blood and other body substances to aid health care providers in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Medical technicians are responsible for operating and maintaining the equipment used to analyze specimens and ensuring that automated and manual tests are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Analyze and test specimens, including proficiency testing and manual procedures, and report appropriately according to protocol*
- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot moderately complex equipment*
- Utilize moderately complex information systems; collect and interpret data*
- Perform and interpret quality control*
- Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, NYS, TJC, HIPAA standards, infection control and safety guidelines*
- Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities and maintain inter-and intra-departmental work flow by cooperating with others
- Maintain adequate inventory and conserve resources
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by participating in educational opportunities
- Is flexible in assuming additional responsibilities as assigned
Required Skills and Experience:
- Education: Minimum of Associates' degree and Registered as a Medical Technician by American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
- Licensure: Meets NYS Department of Health requirements and is currently licensed as a Clinical Lab Technician
- Experience: Prior laboratory experience is preferred
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Problem solving ability and attention to detail is preferred
- Good written and oral communication skills preferred.
- Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely and adjust to changes in work volumes.
Physical Requirements:
- May require light lifting and carrying, including boxes, equipment, stooping and kneeling, maybe required to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Repetitive use of hands (eg. computer keyboard usage), sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time is often necessary; must be able physically to operate automation used in the job.
