Medical Lab Technician Job Description

Cayuga Health System is seeking a highly skilled Medical Lab Technician to join our team. As a Medical Lab Technician, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients by testing and analyzing blood and other body substances.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and test specimens, including proficiency testing and manual procedures, and report appropriately according to protocol.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot moderately complex equipment.
  • Utilize moderately complex information systems; collect and interpret data.
  • Perform and interpret quality control.
  • Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, NYS, TJC, HIPAA standards, infection control, and safety guidelines.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities and maintain inter-and intra-departmental work flow by cooperating with others.
  • Maintain adequate inventory and conserve resources.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Be flexible in assuming additional responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Education: Minimum of Associate's degree and Registered as a Medical Technician by American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • Licensure: Meets NYS Department of Health requirements and is currently licensed as a Clinical Lab Technician.
  • Experience: Prior laboratory experience is preferred.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Problem-solving ability and attention to detail is preferred.
  • Good written and oral communication skills preferred.
  • Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely, and adjust to changes in work volumes.
Physical Requirements:
  • May require light lifting and carrying, including boxes, equipment, stooping, and kneeling, and may be required to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Repetitive use of hands (e.g., computer keyboard usage), sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time is often necessary; must be able physically to operate automation used in the job.
