Status: Full-time (40 hours/week) Non-Exempt   

Reports to: Operations Supervisor 

Compensation: $25.00 / hour + Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance; 401k after six months; vacation   

 

Background: St. Mary’s Center (SMC) has served multi-racial, multi-ethnic poverty-level seniors and young children in West Oakland since 1973. Started as an outreach effort of St. Mary’s Church, the Center was separately incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 1992. Our mission is to be a community of hope, justice, and healing that serves at-risk seniors and preschoolers in the heart of Oakland. We strive to improve quality of life through counseling, shelter, nutrition, advocacy and social support. Position Summary  

You have a can-do attitude, a willingness to learn and take direction, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Prior experience in maintenance is great, but not required. On-the-job training will be provided.   

 

Responsibilities 

Facilities (80%) 

  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors 
  • Clean restrooms, clear cobwebs, empty trash and recycle receptacles 
  • Clean interior and exterior of the building  
  • Perform routine building maintenance and custodial duties  
  • Complete minor repairs 
  • Paint, move equipment, and furniture as needed 
  • Manage and maintain supply inventory 
  • Comply with all safety and health regulations 
  • Work with and maintain relationships with contracted vendors 
  • Support program staff with client moves as needed 
  • Work with team to maintain vehicle fleet 
  • Other duties as required 

 

Landscaping (20%) 

  • Work with the gardener to keep the plantings healthy and watered 
  • Maintain landscaping by clearing weeds, watering, and trimming exterior landscaping 

 

 Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or GED 
  • Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical systems (including relevant equipment and tools) is a plus 
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time; ability to bend, kneel, stoop, and lift or move heavy equipment 
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and other manuals and documents. 
  • Ability to work in a team and follow instructions from supervisors. 
  • Respect for Seniors and the experience of aging, recovery, and community environment 

 

The Facilities & Landscaping Maintenance Technician is expected to 

  • Foster an environment that promotes trust and cooperation among leadership and staff. 
  • Follow policies and procedures to ensure that the principles of St. Mary’s Center are implemented. 
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and in accordance with professional codes of conduct. 
  • Understand the mission, values, and principles of St. Mary’s Center and apply them in work responsibilities.
