Department: Operations - Collections

Hours: Monday-Friday; 8:30am - 5:00pm

Location: 2400 West Bridge Street, Owatonna MN 55060

What will you do:

Maintain an effective control of all delinquent loans and over-drawn share accounts to reduce credit union losses and safeguard our members' funds. Monitor collection accounts, determine, and proceed with the appropriate action to collect funds on those accounts. Assign and track uncollectible accounts to minimize losses.


  • Generate working reports of delinquent loan accounts, delinquent VISA accounts, and overdrawn share accounts. Monitor these reports and review them daily to determine any necessary action to be taken.
  • Initiate phone contact with members within 15 days of delinquency or send a personalized letter if phone contact cannot be made.
  • Handle incoming collection calls and members in collection at the office.
  • Analyze delinquencies and make satisfactory arrangements to accommodate the member.
  • Provide members with the necessary financial counseling; when satisfactory arrangements cannot be made, initiate vigorous collection action.
  • Repossess and liquidate delinquent member account collateral. Coordinate and liquidate collateral of deceased members and collateral that has been seized by law enforcement agencies.
  • Keep current on monitoring and responding to credit reporting disputes and notifications.
  • Assist members with cases of fraud, forgery, and identity theft. Ensure that all areas of operations are compliant with the FACTA Act. Work with other departments to ensure that proper documentation is completed. Work with Federal, State, and local authorities as needed.
  • Compile data, coordinate property inspections, analyze findings and make recommendations regarding the credit union's equitable position for real estate loan s in foreclosure.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of policies and procedures as they pertain to collections and make recommendations as needed to update policies, procedures and guidelines that protect the Credit Union and the member's best interest.
  • Oversee the property management on redeemed real estate.
  • Follow-up with members who are in default on their loan contract due to improper insurance coverage or an unperfected lien on the collateral securing the loan.
  • Process proper documentation to proceed with any necessary legal action on collection accounts.
  • Assign accounts considered uncollectible to an attorney or collection agency.
  • Recommend accounts to be charged off and monitor all previously charged off loans for recovery.
  • Process bond claims relating to collection.
  • Process the necessary paperwork for garnishment of wages or bank accounts.
  • Process bankruptcy notices including communication with bankruptcy attorneys.
  • Prepare and present month end reports of accounts over 60 days past due, loan recoveries, and a report of gain and loss on share accounts.
  • Meet with management regularly (at least monthly) to review progress on delinquent accounts.
  • Attend seminars, webinars, and round table meetings as a way of keeping current on changes in industry trends and innovative products and services.
  • Confidentiality is required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you have:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year's experience in collections or consumer lending is preferred.
  • One year's experience working in a Credit Union or Bank is required.
  • Excellent communication skills, including listening, writing and presentation.
  • Ability to get along with others in stressful, high-pressure situations while maintaining a business-like composure.
  • Ability to work in an environment that demands resourcefulness and flexibility.
  • Ability to comprehend written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Detail orientated and ability to prioritize activities.
  • Strong decision-making skills.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiencies in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel etc.)
  • Regular full-time attendance.
