Trenton, United States American Lung Association Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Manager, Advocacy, Clean Air. Working as a member of the Advocacy and Public Policy department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.

The American Lung Association is leading the fight to protect public health from dangerous air pollution and climate change caused by emissions from vehicles, power plants and other sources. Our nation has made huge progress in cleaning up the air we all breathe, but too many Americans still live in places where air pollution threatens their health – and climate change threatens to move us backward. The Manager, Advocacy, Clean Air will work to provide focused attention on the health benefits of climate action and the urgent need to address the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions including the building and heating sectors. The Manager will work on engaging, educating, and enlisting health focused organizations in support of strong policies to move building electrification forward, to address climate change, and by doing so, improve the lung health of New Jersey residents. The Manager will track state policies and opportunities to engage in direct advocacy, coordinate with and equip other Lung Association advocacy staff to push for clean air policies, work with health and medical organizations and professionals, and recruit grassroots action from individuals who can speak to the personal impact of pollution on their lung health. The Manager will work with a team of advocacy staff at the state and national levels. This is a grant funded position.

Location: The Lung Association does not currently have an office in Trenton, New Jersey. This position is home-based and job responsibilities will take place in and around Trenton, NJ.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with existing healthy air-focused coalitions and help coordinate among health and medical organization coalition partners to identify policy opportunities, coordinate activities and recruit health and medical voice engagement in support of policies to address air pollution, climate change and health disparities in coordination with nationwide Lung Association and coalition campaign efforts.
  • Recruit and support health and medical professionals, and other grassroots and grass tops volunteers, who care about heathy air and/or climate action and are willing to share their stories with decision-makers and media.
  • Create/oversee the creation of materials to support advocacy in New Jersey, such as factsheets, media materials and advocacy letters.
  • In collaboration with Director, Advocacy, engage with policymakers to educate them about the need for policies to protect public health; represent the American Lung Association before public agencies, at conferences and other venues to advance the mission of the organization.
  • Track state policymaking processes and policy opportunities. Coordinate with AVP, Nationwide Advocacy to identify public education, advocacy and health partner coordination opportunities to advance policy goals across New Jersey.
  • Support Lung Association materials, messaging and public education about the health benefits of addressing climate change.
  • Other duties as needed, including support for broad organizational goals providing resources to broader American Lung Association clean air advocacy efforts in other states.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental policy or related field.
  • Three to five years of advocacy experience, such as with advocacy organizations, regulatory or legislative offices, or voluntary health organizations.
  • Knowledge of clean air, climate change and/or environmental policy, with specific knowledge about zero-emissions vehicles policies preferred.
  • Ability to build and sustain relationships with volunteers; excellent project management skills; excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and with a wide range of people, ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines, ability to work independently, and adapt to changing situations.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s license and your own reliable transportation with the ability to travel within assigned area 10% of the time for meetings and conferences, as well as the flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required.
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs. (event supplies).
  • Consistent with its mission, the American Lung Association maintains a smoke-free workplace; all employees must abstain from tobacco use in any form, including vaping.

Compensation: Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. The target hiring range for this position is between $62,500 and $70,000 per annum.

Benefits: The Lung Association offers a comprehensive benefits package including:

  • Paid Leave - 10 vacation days in the first year (15 days thereafter), 2 personal days and 15 sick days per year, as well as 12 company-paid holidays per year. We also offer Paid Parental Leave for eligible employees.
