Atlanta, Georgia, United States International Rescue Committee Full time

Position Overview:
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is dedicated to addressing the most severe humanitarian challenges globally, striving to restore health, safety, education, economic stability, and empowerment to individuals affected by conflict and disaster.

Established in 1933 at the behest of Albert Einstein, the IRC stands as one of the largest international humanitarian non-governmental organizations (INGO), operating in over 50 countries and more than 25 cities across the United States. Our mission is to help individuals survive, regain control over their futures, and strengthen their communities. As a vital force for humanity, IRC staff create lasting impacts by restoring safety, dignity, and hope to millions.

Scope of the Adult Education Program:
The IRC's Adult Education initiative is designed to meet the language, job skills, and integration needs of refugee and immigrant adults through a variety of continuously operating classes throughout the year.

Over 90% of individuals resettled by the IRC in Atlanta each year are identified as having low English proficiency, which restricts their employment opportunities and ability to engage fully in their new communities. Our department offers three distinct courses:

  1. All newly arrived families participate in a multi-day interpreted community and cultural orientation (CO) program that covers various topics to aid community integration.
  2. Participants then enroll in our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class, where the curriculum is tailored to enhance language skills for adult learners at different proficiency levels, incorporating workforce and digital literacy components.
  3. The final course is aimed at interested and eligible students who participate in training programs to earn industry credentials, supported by the Integrated Education and Training (IET) program and the IRC Career Development team, with the objective of successfully completing training and obtaining their credentials.

Responsibilities:
The IRC in Atlanta will utilize one AmeriCorps Adult Education Program Coordinator. This member will:

  • Lead IET programming by planning and preparing integrated education for small groups of students enrolled in workforce credential training.
  • Provide supportive sessions that enhance English language learning and workforce skills education.
  • Collaborate with the IRC's Career Development team and external training providers to ensure curriculum alignment with training objectives and compliance with federal IET standards.
  • Assist in ESOL class programming by working with lead instructors to plan and deliver daily classes focused on language learning, digital literacy, workforce readiness, and integrated life skills.
  • Guide and support Adult Education classroom assistants, including volunteers and college interns, in leading and facilitating instruction.
  • Support CO programming by planning orientations in accordance with organizational guidelines and federal learning objectives, delivering cultural orientation curriculum through interpretation, and assisting students with necessary intake and enrollment forms.
  • Administer English language assessments to evaluate student progress and maintain accurate records of attendance, case notes, and assessment data.
  • Foster a positive learning environment that encourages collaboration and peer support.
  • Maintain open communication with adult education team members and report regularly on program goals, client attendance, and student progress.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants should possess a strong desire to support vulnerable individuals and families, enthusiasm for working in a multicultural environment, and an interest in immigrant and refugee issues. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and effective time management abilities. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required, and an undergraduate degree is preferred.

The IRC is an Equal Opportunity Employer, considering all applicants based on merit without regard to race, sex, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability.

Commitment to Diversity:
The IRC is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and respectful work environment where all individuals are treated fairly and with dignity.
