MFIP Career Counselor

Part-Time/ 30 hours or less/week

$17.30-21/hr

Job Summary

Provides individualized career and employment counseling for participants in the Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP). This position requires intensive case management, coordination of support services, and facilitation between assistance programs while motivating and supporting individuals in achieving the goal of self-sufficiency. The ideal candidate will be able to provide services to individuals and families with diverse educational, economic, and educational backgrounds and who may be navigating multiple barriers in achieving their goals. This candidate will work with a team to address episodic poverty and understanding systemic inequities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Workshop Facilitation:

  • Utilizing established curriculum, facilitate internal and external group career development and cognitive behavior change workshops, as needed. Adapt curriculum, as needed, to address different learning styles.

Program Development:

  • Work with other staff to develop, evaluate and improve programs in response to the community’s workforce needs.

Professional Development:

  • Attend trainings, meetings, and activities to increase skill level and meet professional development goals.

Outreach:

  • Build community awareness and support for SOAR Career Solutions programs through presentations, meetings and other outreach events with area employers, educational institutions, as needed.

Communication:

  • Maintain consistent, ongoing communication with participants to ensure participant engagement. Facilitate communication between St. Louis County partners and participate in monthly case management meetings.

Case Management:

  • Implement intakes and assessments and one-on-one services to individuals, helping them explore, develop and advance on their career plan. Support participants to achieve career goals including job search, application/resume assistance, navigating the hiring process, etc. and monitor progress. Provide resources eligible under MFIP to support client success. Maintain participant confidentiality.

Data Entry and Documentation:

  • Track client interactions and participant support into Workforce One, SOAR database and other online databases. Follow Department of Health and Human Services policy and procedure for non-compliance including NOITS and FSS documentation. Ensure participant case files are maintained and updated as needed. Maintain client confidentiality, adhering to data privacy laws.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience working with people of various social-economic-ethnic backgrounds, understanding of systemic inequalities and episodic poverty.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, knowledge of writing resumes and cover letters.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and Access); PowerPoint and Publisher.
  • Experience with the MFIP and data tracking systems preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team.
  • Able to coordinate multiple activities.
  • Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology or related field preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in career counseling, case management or related skill.

Physical Requirements

These work environment factors are general in nature: CONSTANT: Sit and near vision. FREQUENT: Bend neck; talk/speak; sit and visual accommodation. OCCASIONAL: Lift and carry up to 10 pounds; rotate neck, static neck position; walk; hear within 5 feet and midrange vision.
