Trout Unlimited (TU) is seeking an Aquatic Resources Field Technician in Michigans Lower Peninsula to help fulfill the organizations' mission to bring together diverse interests to care for and recover rivers and streams, so our children can experience the joy of wild and native trout and salmon . The technician will assist TU staff with projects aimed to restore aquatic connectivity, in-stream, and riparian habitat, and promote the long-term values associated with aquatic restoration. Tasks associated with the Aquatic Resources Field Technician include data collection (in the field) using a variety of sampling and surveying equipment. The Technician will often work in a team setting to conduct fisheries and other aquatic community assessments, perform habitat and geomorphic surveys, assist with on-the-ground restoration projects (e.g., riparian plantings), and other various field-based ecological inventories. The position will require frequent overnight travel (multiple days) to remote locations in northern Michigan (camping in and around the Huron-Manistee National Forest) and will work three to four days a week, not to exceed 40 hours per week. The position is paid at a rate of $15 per hour, and travel away from the team’s home base will be provided by or reimbursed by TU.


The anticipated employment date range is May through October 2024. Project work area is primarily located within and around the Huron-Manistee National Forest, but likely to expand throughout the state of Michigan.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a variety of stream surveys including
  • Fisheries surveys
  • Geomorphic assessments
  • Road-stream crossing assessments
  • Various other biological assessments
  • Attend project planning meetings as necessary
  • Assist in the planning, training and coordination of volunteer-based programs

Requirements:
  • Working towards or completed a B.S. in a field related to fisheries management, aquatic ecology, watershed management, geomorphology, or biological systems engineering.
  • Experience using biological field equipment (e.g., electrofishing equipment, surveying equipment, D-nets, etc.).
  • Experience with biological assessments (e.g., macroinvertebrates, fish, habitat, etc.).
  • Experience with data entry using Microsoft Excel and Access.
  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of aquatic resource management.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Self-motivated and highly energetic, with excellent time-management skills.
  • Ability to work in rugged terrain often transporting heavier field equipment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel. Valid driver’s license and own vehicle required.
  • The position will require frequent overnight to relatively remote areas.
  • Some weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Passion for protecting and restoring trout populations and their watersheds.
