Director of Citizenship and Immigration Legal Services - IDPL (Citizenship)

Instituto del Progreso Latino is a community organization whose mission is to contribute to the fullest development of Latino(a) immigrants and their families through education, training and employment that fosters participation in the changing U.S. society while preserving cultural identity and dignity. Founded in 1977 to help Latino’s learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Director of Citizenship and Immigration Legal Services is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the citizenship program including direct or indirect oversight of workshops, volunteers, and application processing services. She/he will assist and help to plan coordinated Citizenship and Immigration Legal services. The Director of Citizenship and Immigration Legal Services supervises staff and is the principal liaison with the Department of Justice, USCIS, and other community organizations working on citizenship, and immigration legal services.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides overall leadership to Citizenship and Immigration Legal Services program to elevate staff and participants to their fullest potential.
  • Recruits, hires, supervises, trains, and offers development opportunities to staff.
  • Maintains up to date on changing legislation related to citizenship and immigration law and activities that can impact the program.
  • Prepares and submits reports as needed to supervisor and funders in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with other programs and initiatives at Instituto.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with funders and programmatic partners.
  • Assists and helps design recruiting systems for pro bono attorneys.
  • Works in a team with department colleagues, harmoniously leading the team of DOJ and citizenship and immigration legal staff.
  • Understands and applies current research on best-practices for team building, marketing and customer service.
  • Implements previously approved budgets, and will help to plan future budgets and funding plans, including coordination with Instituto finance staff and monthly reviews of expenses.
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity to clients, and responsive pro-active leadership to staff.
  • Successfully communicates with community leaders and elected officials.
  • Convenes stake holders and IDPL personnel for program planning and evaluation.
  • Analyzes and proposes modifications to the business model of the department, including a strong fee for service component.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

  • MA Preferred; Must have Bachelor’s Degree or Foreign equivalent of university level credit education.
  • 2 years of significant supervisory experience in the field
  • DOJ accreditation or experience in immigration law.
  • Experience in Citizenship workshops, and familiarity with issues of importance to the immigrant community.
  • Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality.
  • Able to work with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team or independently with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills.
  • Committed to superior customer service.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Strong telephone skills and ability to maintain composure under pressure.
  • Strong project management skills, attention to detail and effective management of multiple projects at one time.
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, and manage conflict.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Majority of work performed in a general office environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
