Role Summary

The Senior Attorney role is focused on providing expert legal representation and immigration counseling to individuals before the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This position emphasizes the handling of intricate cases involving asylum seekers, including vulnerable populations such as children and families. Additionally, the Senior Attorney will offer guidance and support to pro bono attorneys working on complex cases managed by NIJC.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Possess a minimum of three years of legal practice, preferably with a strong emphasis on immigration law.
  • Conduct initial client assessments, collecting pertinent information for case discussions and determining eligibility for services.
  • Formulate and execute strategies for complex cases in collaboration with supervisory staff.
  • Prepare cases for hearings or interviews, which includes drafting necessary legal documents and advocating for clients effectively.
  • Manage a designated caseload while maintaining a thorough understanding of legal resources and immigration policies.
  • Provide specialized support to pro bono attorneys engaged in complex cases.
  • Stay informed on current immigration laws and relevant legal implications affecting client representation.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with EOIR, DHS, and various community organizations to facilitate effective advocacy.
  • Ensure adherence to ethical standards, maintaining client confidentiality and managing client funds responsibly.
  • Keep detailed and accurate records of client interactions and case progress, preparing reports as required.
  • Participate in ongoing training related to immigration law and may lead training sessions as necessary.
  • Identify and analyze trends in legal and social issues, proposing advocacy strategies as needed.
  • Comply with all professional standards set forth by relevant legal bodies and organizational policies.
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Education: Juris Doctorate Degree is required, along with at least three years of legal experience, ideally in immigration or human rights law.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in Spanish is essential, with strong writing and analytical capabilities.
  • Reasoning Skills: Ability to address practical challenges and interpret complex instructions effectively.
