Legal Assistant, Denial Management

Job Purpose
The Legal Assistant supports the Denial Management department by drafting appeals and other correspondence aimed at addressing clinical and technical denials issued by insurers. The Legal Assistant works closely with the department attorney(s) in performing legal research, reviewing payer policy updates, and providing a broad spectrum of legal services under the supervision of the attorney(s).
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support to attorneys and enhance office effectiveness
- Conduct investigations and statistical and/or documentary research
- Locate and develop case relevant information
- Prepare and type up basic legal documents, appeals, and correspondence
- Monitor deadlines and juggle calendars
- Assist department attorney in resolving escalated appeals, disputes, and grievances submitted to insurers
- Use, protect and disclose patients’ protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Proven working experience as a Legal Assistant or Legal Secretary
- Knowledge of day-to-day operations of a legal office
- Advances Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook skills
- Working knowledge of case management software
- Excellent secretarial and organizational skills
- Ability to juggle multiple activities and work under pressure
Working Conditions
- Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to move around the work area; Sit; perform manual tasks; operate tools and other office equipment such as computer, computer peripherals and telephones; extend arms; kneel; talk and hear.
- Mental Demands: The employee must be able to follow directions, collaborate with others, and handle stress.
- Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
