Position Description

The Communications Specialist is responsible for executing internal communications strategies by creating and delivering compelling content that engages employees and strengthens the company’s culture. The Communications Specialist will translate business strategies into key messages, develop appropriate internal communications initiatives in support of those strategies, and execute and drive programs that build trust, drive engagement, and align teams. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to execute communications plans, strong writing skills, and a natural ability to think strategically while delivering tactical results. The Communications Specialist will also work closely with key stakeholders to ensure all internal communication is clear, consistent, and aligned with R.S. Hughes’ mission, vision, and brand promise. This role is expected to adhere to all company policies and safety protocols.

Key Competencies Required to be Successful as a Communications Specialist:

  • Creating, scheduling, and posting content across varied mediums, such as email, social media, and the company’s website. This includes understanding news value, adhering to the editorial calendar, and understanding the technical capabilities of various communication platforms as well as authoring content.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate translation of internal content utilizing internal translation tools.
  • Maintaining and updating the editorial calendar to ensure that communications are timely and relevant.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, working collaboratively to ensure communications are accurate and connect with specific audiences.
  • Working with key organizational stakeholders to ensure all communication is clear, consistent, and aligned with the company’s goals and values. This includes ensuring communication messaging and content are of the highest quality, accurate, and appropriate for the target audience.
  • Monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of internal communications and making recommendations for improvement based on feedback and data analysis.
  • Assisting with crisis communications as appropriate, ensuring all employees are informed and up to date.
  • Performing other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

Education/Certification/Licenses

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in internal communications, corporate communications, or a related field.

Skills That Will Make You Successful

  • Excellent writing, editing, and project management skills with keen attention to detail across all tasks and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, creatively, and innovatively while also acting tactically to accomplish key goals.
  • Knowledge of best practices for internal communications.
  • Experience with content creation and delivery, including email, newsletters, intranet content, videos, and presentations.
  • Knowledge of distinct writing styles, including AP style and can write for both long and short formats and a variety of mediums.
  • Excellent people and project management skills with the ability to thrive while managing multiple time-sensitive projects under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with key stakeholders across the organization.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and cloud-based internal communications platforms.
  • Experience managing and maintaining internal communication tools (e.g., cloud-based email software, SharePoint intranet) is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of HTML is a plus.
