Overview
Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), TB Imaging Program (TBIP).
Technical Requirements:
- Perform a broad range of procedures and tasks related to evaluating vaccine efficacy in a primate model of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB).
- Isolate immune cells from a variety of animal blood and tissues under BSL2 and BSL3 lab conditions for downstream applications.
- Perform a broad range of immunological assays related to the in vitro and in vivo evaluation of experimental TB vaccines: flow cytometry/cell sorting, Luminex/ELISA, bulk and single cell RNA isolation for sequence analysis.
- Perform (BSL3) assays that relate to quantifying TB burdens from animal tissues culturing) and assessing anti-mycobacterial activity ex vivo following vaccination (ie, in vitro growth assays).
- Conduct research independently including designing and executing experiments, writing animal protocols, data analysis and presentation, and preparation of data for publication.
- Independently work on generation RNA sequencing data for immunological profiling.
- Interact with scientists from our lab and other laboratories and institutions to implement 'best practice' data analysis pipelines related to transcriptional, epigenetic, and immunological analysis of immune samples after immunization.
- Interact with students, post-doctoral fellows and non-doctoral research technicians on experimental design and laboratory-based methodologies.
- Maintain detailed records of experiments and results and clearly communicate data to others in using reports and data, and for publication.
- May be required to perform duties related to TB vaccine studies at an off-site location (Bioqual Inc., 2501 Research Blvd, Rockville, MD 20850) and maintain compliance with all training requirements of this non-NIH facility.
- Responsible for laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment
Specific Qualifications:
- Masters degree in related field is required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in a laboratory setting is required.
- Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.
- Proficient computer skills with spreadsheets and other software to record data.
- Effective and clear communication skills and the ability to work in a high stress environment.
- Must be able to pass extensive background check and Public Trust 5 clearance.
- Willing to work flexible hours, weekend work possible.
- Ability to work in a BSL-3 high containment environment is required.
- Ability to work in a team under oversight in ABSL-3 laboratory environments following SOPs.
- Ability to work in an Animal BSL-3 high containment environment is required.
- In-person work in the BSL-3 laboratory and in ABSL-3 laboratory with NHPs, rabbits, and mice, required.
