The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking an Assistant Collections Manager, Ornithology for our Research & Collections department. The Assistant Collections Manager, Ornithology works closely with the Associate Curator, Ornithology managing the Ornithology collection under the direct supervision of the department’s Curator. Apply basic collections operations, including processing incoming and outgoing loans and accessions, entering and maintaining records in NHMLA’s EMu database, maintaining the organization of the collection, and facilitating the use of the collection by researchers and other users. This position will serve as the liaison between curatorial staff, Conservation, and the Registrar at the Natural History Museum. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.


Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Collection Care and Improvement: Cares for the collection on a day-­to­-day basis, including organizing, storing, securing and conserving objects. Implements the department’s pest monitoring and management protocols.

  • Collection Documentation: Provides documentation for the collection, including cataloging, maintaining, and updating database records.

  • Collection Processing: Processes all incoming and outgoing objects and/or materials including new donations, exchanges, and loans.

  • Research Support: Answers researcher queries; facilitates visits and access to objects and data by researchers using the collection.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Curator, dependent on organizational need.

  • To a limited extent, may support Education, Exhibitions, Public Programs, Advancement and other NHMLAC departments and projects through tours, programs, answering queries, and fulfilling data requests.


This position has the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field and 2 years collection experience, which might be concurrent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Basic to working knowledge of avian taxonomy, common specimen preparations, the organization and management of bird collections, and community standards and existing best practices in ornithology.

  • Basic to working knowledge of data types associated with bird specimens and common principles of informatics and data management in natural history collections.

  • Working knowledge of typical procedures for processing specimen loans and acquisitions.

  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication.

  • Ability to follow procedures and protocols with attention to detail.

  • Experience using a personal computer and with typical word processing, spreadsheet, email, calendar, and other software (PC and/or Macintosh).
