About the Role

As an Automation and Controls Engineer at PaperTech, you will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining automation systems and controls for our pressed paperboard packaging processes. Your expertise will ensure the efficiency, reliability, and safety of our production lines, contributing to the high standards of quality and productivity that our customers expect.

Responsibilities: other duties may be assigned as needed

  • System Design and Implementation: Develop and design automation systems, including PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), HMI (Human Machine Interface), and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for paper production lines.
  • Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to automation and control systems. Perform regular maintenance and upgrades to ensure optimal performance and reliability of equipment and systems.
  • Process Optimization: Analyze existing processes and identify opportunities for automation and control improvements. Implement strategies to enhance efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve product quality.
  • Project Management: Lead and manage automation projects from conception through to completion, ensuring adherence to budget, timeline, and quality standards. Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including production, maintenance, and engineering staff.
  • Technical Support and Training: Provide technical support to production and maintenance teams. Develop and deliver training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of staff in automation and control systems.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure all automation and control systems comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and company policies. Conduct safety audits and implement safety improvements as necessary.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, software programs, and maintenance records. Prepare reports on system performance, project progress, and any issues encountered.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in programming PLCs (e.g., Allen Bradley) and HMI/SCADA systems.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, instrumentation, and control theory.
  • Experience with industrial networking protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, P&IDs, and technical specifications.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Education and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in automation and controls engineering, preferably in the packaging manufacturing industry. Experience with paper machine automation is a plus.
  • Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or certifications in automation and control systems (e.g., ISA, PMP) are a plus.

Working Conditions

  • Periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to move about the 150,000 square foot facility freely and safely.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Regular work hours with occasional overtime as required.
  • Environment involves exposure to manufacturing equipment and industrial settings, with adherence to safety protocols.
