Feeding South Dakota is the state's largest hunger-relief organization, with a mission to end hunger in South Dakota. Through our programs and agency partners we are providing food in all 66 counties of our state and fighting hunger in rural communities, metro areas and Native American Reservations.

Job Summary

The Communications Specialist promotes awareness of, and support for, the Feeding South Dakota mission. The position is responsible for assisting with the implementation of a comprehensive communication strategy that communicates the organization’s message to a variety of audiences. The Communications Specialist collaborates with all departments of the food bank to ensure integrity of messaging and consistency with brand standards.

Job Responsibilities

  • Planning: With assistance from the Marketing & Communications Director, support the implementation of a comprehensive communication strategy across all platforms, engaging all audiences.
  • Writing: Produce and/or copy edit collateral such as staff communications, press releases, newsletters, stories, campaign-specific messaging, and/or event scripts for all departments.
  • Storytelling: Visit the food bank’s partners and programs to meet neighbors facing hunger, volunteers, and community partners to collect stories for marketing materials.
  • Social Media: Create and post social media messaging in alignment with a monthly plan, and monitor and participate in online conversations on behalf of the food bank.
  • Media: Maintain media contact database, schedule public relation opportunities, create and send alerts and press releases, develop interview support materials, and coordinate with relevant staff to fulfill interview opportunities.
  • Donor Communications: Create email marketing campaigns and assist with execution using web-based software.
  • Maintain knowledge of hunger issues and causes, understanding of communities served, and impact of the organization’s work.
  • Provide backup support to the Sioux Falls Administrative Associate and Creative Services Coordinator.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary work: Sedentary work involves lifting approximately 10 pounds at a time and occasionally lifting or carrying articles like files, paper, or small office equipment. A sedentary job will usually involve sitting for long periods of time, with occasional walking in the warehouse areas. Most of the work performed in a sedentary job involves operating a computer and telephone.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED Required; Associates Degree preferred.
  • Three to Six years of experience in communications, public relations, or a related field.
  • Commitment to the mission of the organization.
  • Basic use of Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills.
  • Great editing and proofing skills.
  • Working knowledge of social media account management.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills: effective listener, writes clearly and persuasively, seeks clarification by asking questions.
  • Self-motivator that delivers accurate, effective, and timely work product.
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends when necessary.
