Job Summary:

The Construction Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of heavy construction equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and graders. The role requires a deep understanding of mechanical systems and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues efficiently. This position ensures that equipment operates safely and effectively, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity on construction sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspection and Diagnosis:

    • Conduct thorough inspections of heavy equipment to identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.
    • Use diagnostic tools and equipment to assess problems and determine necessary repairs.
  • Maintenance and Repair:

    • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as changing oil, replacing filters, and checking fluid levels.
    • Repair or replace defective parts including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
    • Perform welding, fabricating, and machining tasks as needed for repairs.
  • Record Keeping:

    • Maintain detailed records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
    • Document parts used, labor hours, and any other relevant information for billing and inventory purposes.
  • Safety and Compliance:

    • Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
    • Ensure that equipment complies with industry regulations and standards.
  • Communication and Coordination:

    • Collaborate with construction managers and operators to understand equipment issues and prioritize repairs.
    • Communicate effectively with team members and provide updates on repair status and equipment readiness.
  • Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving:

    • Address and resolve mechanical issues promptly to minimize downtime.
    • Analyze equipment performance and implement solutions to improve efficiency and reliability.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Completion of a vocational training program or apprenticeship in heavy equipment mechanics is preferred.
  • Experience:

    • Proven experience working as a heavy equipment mechanic, ideally in a construction setting.
    • Familiarity with various types of heavy machinery and their maintenance requirements.
  • Skills:

    • Strong mechanical and technical aptitude.
    • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Certifications:

    • Relevant certifications (e.g., ASE, OEM-specific certifications) are advantageous.
  • Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to lift and carry heavy parts and tools.
    • Capability to work in various weather conditions and environments.
    • Comfort with bending, kneeling, and crouching to access equipment components.
