Summary: The Safety & Training Specialist will manage the safety, security and risk management of the organization to promote and ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations to include but not limited to: policy & procedure development, recordkeeping, reporting, training and communication for members, staff, and volunteers. Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Safety and Security Management

  • Lead safety management programs and committees: develop and distribute safety committee agenda, coordinate and monitor progress on tasks and projects, take initiative in seeking and implementing best practices to pro-actively minimize risk exposure, quarterly and ongoing
  • Develop, maintain, and regularly update with board review, safety, security and risk policy & procedures, annually and ongoing
  • Develop and/or maintain consistent tracking systems for all items related to safety, security and risk, as needed
  • Conduct virtual or in-person inspections at all sites to identify risk levels and monitor program safety procedures, checklists and equipment to ensure safety compliance standards meet or exceed Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and licensing requirements
  • Monitor safety and security corrective actions to ensure issues have been resolved, as needed
  • Stay current on all BGCA safety requirements and communicate challenges and opportunities to HR Manager and CEO, as needed
  • Maintain state and federal labor law, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), BGCA and other required postings, as needed
  • Support staff in emergency response procedures to include but not limited to developing and practicing evacuation plans, fire drills, lockdown drills, and Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate (ALICE) drills, monthly and as needed for retraining
  • Develop and continually monitor, update, and communicate emergency procedures to all program and administrative staff, as needed
  • Maintain incident report files and ensure appropriate follow-up procedures, daily


Training

In collaboration with the Learning & Development Specialist

  • Develop and implement training in risk management policy and procedures, health & safety, emergency procedures and other trainings as identified
  • Collect and maintain staff training certifications and logs and other metrics as assigned
  • Conduct developed trainings using principals of adult learning
  • Prepare training materials (handouts, computer-based trainings) as needed
  • Develop topic specific trainings, and facilitate trainings as needed
  • Prepare and distribute training calendars, notices and reminders, monthly or as needed
  • Maintain documentation of training activities
  • Coordinate and prepare staff training activities, classes, and materials
  • Monitor collection and reporting of training hours, needs assessments, training and professional development expenses, professional affiliations, training outcomes, and other metrics as assigned
  • Serve as primary point of contact for CPR, achieve and maintain First Aid instructor status, maintain inventory of materials, training and curriculum
  • Serve as primary instructor for staff and community CPR trainings including evening and weekends as needed
  • Assist in selecting, and participate as part of the summer training committee to develop, prepare and facilitate trainings for staff, annually
  • Maintain a high level of proficiency and innovation using best practices of workforce development
Requirements:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and or ability required.

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in business, communications, human resources, education or related degree field preferred (may substitute any combination of related work and educational experience).
  • Minimum of 1-year experience developing and conducting trainings for adult learners
  • Must obtain training and certification as a BGCA National Training Associate, BGCA peer safety assessor, Mental Health First trainer, Weikart Methods, and/or other training opportunities as identified within first year of employment
  • Computer proficiency and intermediate knowledge of MS Office programs: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Knowledge or ability to learn various training and meeting platforms, as needed
  • Must possess current Alaska driver’s license with reliable, insured vehicle
  • Must possess or obtain a Commercial Driver’s License for purpose of driver training & backup driver within first year of employment
  • Must obtain CPR/First Aid certification within 90 days of hire, and must be a certified CPR/First Aid instructor within 6 months
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including adherence to grammar and spelling conventions
  • Ability to compile, organize and analyze statistical reports required
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision making, especially during emergency situations
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends and travel to rural Alaska sites, when needed
  • Ability to foster team approach to operations related to safety and security
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility to meet changing priorities

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, sit, talk, see and hear. This position involves frequent repetitive motion and reaching with hands and arms. The position involves operating and conducting exterior inspections of passenger vans and buses. Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is an office setting with frequent meetings and errands outside of the building. Occasional interruptions do occur, including visits from children, staff, and Board members. It may be necessary for the employee to use his/her personal automobile to attend meetings outside of the office or complete errands. Employee frequently works in and around passenger vans and buses in all weather conditions.
