Under general supervision, oversees the volunteers with special needs and/or a disability, both on and off zoo grounds, including both ZOOTeen, Zoo Educator, and seasonal Education volunteer activities. Candidate must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays. Reports to the Volunteer Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions *Duties will include, but are not limited to the following*

  • Assist volunteers with disabilities (Sensory, Physical, Mental and/or Intellectual) during their shift times. Serve as a role model for them to act professionally and develop social skill sets while coaching and supporting them to be as successful and independent as possible by assisting with things like scheduling shifts, recording hours, interacting with visitors, managing stress/anxiety, and staying focused on the task at hand.
  • Help to train, coach and support peer (typical) partners.
  • Create vocational and habitual goals for the ZOOTeens apart of ADaPT.
  • Support Volunteer Department staff with the supervision and coordination of the ZOOTeen and Zoo Educator programs. Support includes scheduling volunteers, making/returning phone calls and emails, participate in departmental trainings, general supervision responsibilities during volunteer events.
  • Mentor ZOOTeens on a variety of on and off grounds projects, including community service and conservation initiatives.
  • Evaluate and provide productive feedback to volunteers. Areas of evaluation are set by the Volunteer Supervisor.
  • Document volunteer hours into Volunteer Works program, as needed.
  • Utilize various types of equipment and machinery including computer, telephone, copier, remote radio and general office supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Training & Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or be 18 year of age by start date.
  • 1 year enrollment in the Toledo ZOOTeen program or 1 year experience working youth
  • Experience with individuals with disabilities preferred
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • The Toledo Zoo is a drug-free workplace, including marijuana.
