POSITION SUMMARY

The role involves serving as a certified feeding assistant, collaborating with dietary and nursing teams to ensure efficient meal service delivery.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS:
  • This position is part of the dietary department.
  • Before assisting with feeding residents without complex needs, the dining assistant must complete a State-approved Paid Feeding Assistant Training course, which covers:
    • Feeding methodologies
    • Support with feeding and hydration
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
    • Appropriate responses to resident behavior
    • Safety protocols, including emergency procedures
    • Infection control practices
    • Understanding resident rights
    • Identifying behavioral changes in residents and the importance of reporting to nursing staff
  • Provides assistance to nursing staff in feeding residents who do not have complex feeding issues, under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN). In emergencies, the dining assistant must contact a supervisory nurse for assistance.
  • The interdisciplinary team determines resident eligibility for the program based on the latest assessments and care plans.
  • The role typically involves working one hour before and one hour after the full meal service.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Meal Service:
  • Facilitates transportation of residents to and from the dining area for meals.
  • Assists in preparing the dining room and completing pre-meal tasks such as table arrangements and drink service.
  • Distributes trays and beverages to residents in the dining area.
  • Delivers meal trays to residents' rooms, including setting up the tray and food items.
  • Provides assistance and feeding support to residents without complex feeding needs.
  1. Responds to call lights as necessary before or after meals, allowing nursing staff to concentrate on resident care and medication administration.
  2. Supports hydration needs by providing ice and water to residents between meals, including during snack rounds.
