The Specialist will help to ensure program compliance with all Head Start Performance Standards, licensing guidelines, and Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) guidelines related to Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and nutrition regulations.Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to): Develops, plans, implements and evaluates early childhood nutrition related programs based on recommended nutritional requirements, budgeted resources and input from students, families and staff.Adheres to and promotes modern food service management principles.Provides for nutritious, wholesome, and safe food related programming that meets Federal, state, and local health department rules, licensing standards and CACFP guidelines.Works closely with the CACFP sponsor and vendor to ensure high quality food services in the program and the individual food needs of students are met.Develops, implements and evaluates training programs for staff as it relates to nutrition services and education provided.Organizes and prepares appropriate nutrition lessons, based on the demographics of the population being served, which illustrate basic food preparation techniques that will be less costly and healthier for families.Monitors compliance of CACFP provider and vendors.Researches and prepares nutrition related newsletters, daily announcements and short articles for school newsletters, staff meetings, etc.Participates in home visits and parent-child playgroups to support the 0-5 staff in promoting nutrition and wellness as needed.Responsible for nutrition education, program menus, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program implementation at all Head Start and Early Head Start sites.Presents lessons, workshops and training on basic nutrition, healthy weight management, and menus.Attends staff and program meetings as directed.Maintains organized, complete files to meet grant requirements, including evaluation data.Monitors and completes growth assessments and follow-ups with families.Attends professional development opportunities as recommended.Participates in school open houses, health events and community programs demonstrating healthy snacks and food to meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.Serve Safe certification obtained and utilized as needed for program.Develops, maintains, monitors and distributes menus, food allergy lists, allergy sensitive menus, individual child menus, etc. for the Early Head Start and Head Start Program.Reviews all SDA forms and monitors menus are inclusive of food allergies and religious and/or other preferences.Maintains inventory of nutrition related items and distributes items as needed.Collaborates with education and family engagement staff to accommodate students' sensory needs in relation to menu items.Collaborates with community partners to provide resources and training for staff and families.Assists in providing CACFP trainings and family style service training.Assists in snack and food acquisition and distribution as needed for the program.Helps to monitor classrooms, socializations and home visits to ensure compliance with all food/nutrition related regulations.Consistently models Win-Win leadership.Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to): Performs other related duties as assigned.Qualifications:Education:Associate's degree from an accredited education institution in Institutional Food Service Management, Nutrition/Dietetics or related field with school/healthcare and/or food service experience. Experience working with preschool and school age students and at-risk families is preferred.Skills/Other:Knowledge of Mileap, State of Michigan, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), CACFP, federal laws and regulations and local District policies as they relate to food service, purchasing and record retention and property control. Knowledge of equipment, computerized programs used in school food service operations. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as an effective team member. Evidence of experience presenting curriculum to students of all ages. Experience coordinating programs preferred. Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills to identify needs and develop solutions. Ability to utilize district technology and work to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the district.Ability to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with program goals.
