Senior Manager of Solar Project Development

Our Opportunity:
The Senior Manager of Project Development position will be based in our Arlington, VA headquarters. In this role, you will manage a team of project developers. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of the solar industry and solar project development, from real estate to local permitting. A key requirement would be a track record of bringing solar projects from origination, through development, to NTP. A broad understanding of county zoning practices and solar energy is a necessity, as you will be responsible for advising and guiding your team through complex zoning cases. Prior project development experience is required.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage a team of project developers to ensure projects secure local zoning permits
- Provide guidance and serve as a solar development expert to internal members of the development team
- Oversee zoning application preparation, inclusive of local tax modeling and community relationships and outreach
- Ensure proper coordination between internal environmental and zoning permitting teams
- Provide guidance to internal development team in areas of managing outside consultants’ budgets and scope
- Meet with landowners and community stakeholders to establish a positive, long-term relationship with host communities.
- Provide project budget, progress and timeline updates to management
- Lead and assist in zoning negotiations.
- Ensure project milestones are met through the development process. This includes compiling and organizing data for presentation to the management to assess development risk versus spending at various stages of the project’s life.
- Work cross-departmentally to maintain clear communication and smooth collaboration at all stages of the project development process
- Travel to project site locations and attend stakeholder meetings as needed
Technical Skills & Expertise:
- Minimum of 5 years managing multiple solar development projects
- College degree required.
- Possess subject matter expertise in a business function related to the development process.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong negotiation and presentation skills.
- Ability to create forms, letters and fundamental spreadsheets using MS Word and Excel, create presentations in Power Point and perform internet-based research.
- Self-motivated with ability to work in a team and independently.
- Safe driving record, valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to walk over undeveloped land unassisted, travel unassisted and sit at a computer for long periods of time.
- Ability to work evenings to attend meetings and community events.
- 30-50% travel in region will be required during business hours in support of the position responsibilities.
