JOB DESCRIPTION: Director of Finance


Job Title: Director of Finance


Job Synopsis:  The Director of Finance works closely with the Executive Director and other staff members to handle the day-to-day financial operations of programs and services. The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing internal controls, setting financial targets, developing a financial strategy, conducting feasibility studies, monitoring expenditure, overseeing the annual financial audit, managing cash flow, evaluating investments, and ensuring tax compliance. Additionally, the Director of Finance is responsible for the accounting operations of the organization, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, billing for services, and payroll, including the oversight of direct deposit. The Director of Finance is also responsible for monitoring income and expenses, preparing financial reports, implementing the employee benefits plan (health and dental insurance, retirement, and workman’s comp), and ensuring the implementation of all other insurances relevant to the organization's work. This role will also play a key part in developing program and organizational budgets. Over time, this position will take on more Human Resource functions and review and modify tasks previously conducted by the Comptroller. After a one-year transition period, the scope of this position will be reviewed, and any changes to the position title and/or compensation will be determined at that time.


Job Responsibilities:

1.       Keep accurate and current accounts using appropriate computer software for accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger.

2.      Prepare the payroll and maintain accurate records related to all aspects of payroll.

3.      Prepare payroll information for direct deposit in a timely manner.

4.      Make all bank deposits promptly.

5.      Reconcile assigned accounts and generate weekly, monthly, and annual reports as needed by the organization in a timely and accurate manner.

6.      Coordinate all billing for programs and services, working with the appropriate staff to ensure timely billing, and accurately track, record, and reconcile incoming payments for services.

7.      Work with a designated auditing firm to ensure the completion of the annual audit report within a reasonable timeframe.

8.      Collaborate with auditors to enhance the accounting system as needed and implement suggested changes in coordination with the Executive Director.

9.      Collaborate with the Executive Director and other staff to develop, implement, and manage the annual budget.

10.  Provide an ongoing assessment of the organization's income and expenses and make budget revision recommendations to the Executive Director.

11.  Analyze complex financial data.

12.  Immediately inform the Executive Director of unexpected billing denials or significant changes in the financial position.

13.  Manage internal controls.

14.  Work with the Executive Director and other staff to minimize organizational risks.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: 

Below are the key requirements for the position:


1. A solid understanding of accounting and financial reporting standards for voluntary health and welfare organizations is required.

2. Proficiency in using personal computer systems and accounting and payroll software is essential.

3. Thorough knowledge of accrual accounting and its application for The Arc of Central Virginia is necessary.

4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong proofreading abilities, are required.

5. Accurate and neat work, along with the ability to meet deadlines, is essential.

6. Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with funding sources is critical for this role.

7. Essential to be able to coordinate work with other staff members and program service areas within the organization.

8. Reliable and available to prepare payroll and all necessary internal and external reports, and to work under the supervision of the Executive Director.

9. Represent The Arc of Central Virginia in a professional manner to funding sources and constituents of The Arc.

10. Proficiency in personal computer software programs such as Excel, QuickBooks, Microsoft Office Suite, and Windows, as well as the ability to use a 10-key calculator.

 11. A valid Virginia driver’s license with an excellent driving record is necessary.


  • Education and Experience: The Director of Finance must possess a bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, or a related field with a minimum of at two years experience in accounting and financial management in a non-profit or business setting.
