POSITION OVERVIEW: Finance Director

Role Summary: The Finance Director collaborates closely with the Executive Director and other team members to manage the daily financial functions of the organization’s programs and services. This role is accountable for supervising internal controls, establishing financial objectives, crafting a financial strategy, conducting feasibility assessments, monitoring expenditures, overseeing the annual financial audit, managing cash flow, evaluating investment opportunities, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations. Furthermore, the Finance Director is tasked with the accounting operations of the organization, which includes accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger management, billing for services, and payroll oversight, including direct deposit administration. This position also involves tracking income and expenses, generating financial reports, implementing employee benefits plans (including health and dental insurance, retirement plans, and workers' compensation), and ensuring the execution of all other relevant insurances. The Finance Director will play a crucial role in developing both program and organizational budgets. Over time, this position may incorporate additional Human Resource responsibilities and review tasks previously managed by the Comptroller. After a designated transition period, the scope of this role will be assessed, and any modifications to the title and/or compensation will be discussed at that time.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Maintain precise and up-to-date financial records using appropriate software for accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger management.

2. Process payroll and keep accurate records pertaining to all payroll aspects.

3. Ensure timely preparation of payroll information for direct deposit.

4. Promptly execute all bank deposits.

5. Reconcile assigned accounts and produce weekly, monthly, and annual reports as required by the organization in a timely and accurate manner.

6. Coordinate all billing for programs and services, collaborating with relevant staff to ensure timely invoicing and accurately track, record, and reconcile incoming payments.

7. Collaborate with a designated auditing firm to guarantee the completion of the annual audit report within a reasonable timeframe.

8. Work with auditors to enhance the accounting system as necessary and implement recommended changes in conjunction with the Executive Director.

9. Partner with the Executive Director and other staff to develop, implement, and manage the annual budget.

10. Continuously assess the organization’s income and expenses and provide budget revision recommendations to the Executive Director.

11. Analyze complex financial data.

12. Immediately notify the Executive Director of unexpected billing denials or significant shifts in the financial landscape.

13. Manage internal controls effectively.

14. Collaborate with the Executive Director and other staff to mitigate organizational risks.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

1. A comprehensive understanding of accounting and financial reporting standards for voluntary health and welfare organizations is essential.

2. Proficiency in personal computer systems and accounting and payroll software is critical.

3. In-depth knowledge of accrual accounting and its application is necessary.

4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong proofreading abilities, are required.

5. Attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines are crucial.

6. Ability to cultivate and maintain positive relationships with funding sources is vital for this role.

7. Coordination with other staff members and program service areas within the organization is essential.

8. Reliability and availability to prepare payroll and all necessary internal and external reports, while working under the supervision of the Executive Director, are required.

9. Represent The Arc of Central Virginia professionally to funding sources and stakeholders.

10. Proficiency in software programs such as Excel, QuickBooks, Microsoft Office Suite, and Windows, along with the ability to use a 10-key calculator.

11. A valid Virginia driver's license with a commendable driving record is necessary.

Education and Experience: The Finance Director must hold a bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, or a related field, with a minimum of two years of experience in accounting and financial management within a non-profit or business environment.
