General job description

Vyriad is seeking scientists interested in applying their background to intellectual property management at a clinical stage biotechnology company. This entry level position includes both administrative and technical work to support Vyriad’s intellectual assets. The Intellectual Property Specialist will perform independent tasks, as well as tasks requiring significant interaction with scientists, attorneys, business development professionals, and corporate partners. The successful candidate will be trained by and report to the Director of Intellectual Property.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administrative – primary responsibility for upkeep of Vyriad’s patent and activity dockets
  • Screen law firm correspondence, identify due dates, input and file into Vyriad’s systems
  • Entry of patent application data and monitoring of application status in Vyriad’s systems
  • Periodic review of database integrity
  • Patents – support Vyriad’s patent portfolio by assisting with the following:
  • Review draft provisional applications and patent correspondence for scientific accuracy
  • Research and drafting of background material for patent attorney use
  • Depending upon eligibility, willingness to sit for the US Patent bar (second year, anticipated)
  • Invention Disclosures – support Vyriad’s internal disclosure process by assisting with the following:
  • Work with scientists to draft robust invention disclosures
  • Perform prior art searches and patent landscaping
  • Review funding sources and project codes related to new inventions
  • Protection of non-patent assets may include assistance with:
  • Review of confidentiality agreements
  • Review of in-licenses for research reagents
  • Other duties as assigned


Education Requirements

  • Doctorate level degree required in a biological or medically related field


Required skills and/or qualifications

  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to read and understand scientific publications in a broad range of biological disciplines
  • Ability to interpret and consolidate data

Inclination and ability to work collaboratively

Effective communication with all levels of professionals and staff.


Preferred skills and/or qualifications

  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Hands-on experience, study, or coursework in virology or immunology
  • Proficiency with sequence search and analysis tools


Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
