Biomedical engineer: Cell Therapy Applications

Cell X is seeking a biomedical engineer for our cell therapy Applications scientist position. The focus of this position is to become proficient on our Celligent™ platform technology, designing and executing experiments, to showcase our technology for customers and to forward internal development. As a cell therapy application specialist, you will be expected to contribute novel ideas and solutions to address challenges and improve processes on the Celligent platform for reproducible and automated stem cell/adherent cell processes. The candidate will also contribute to general laboratory and operational support.


The candidate must be extremely motivated with the ability to work independently. Persistence, problem solving skills and a mindset for innovation are all key qualities in an applicant. The candidate must be comfortable pivoting between projects with the ability to excel in a fast-moving environment. This role is hands-on and lab-based in our beautiful new laboratory space in Woburn, MA.

Duties and Responsibilities:


Experimental Design and Execution:

•Design and execute experiments on the Celligent™ Platform to automate adherent cell/ iPSC derived therapeutic processes

•Solve technical issues to achieve the set experimental design

•Independently plan and execute experiments, with some direction from senior scientific staff, to achieve stated goals for external and internal projects

Laboratory Techniques and Procedures:

•Work with aseptic techniques for maintenance of mammalian cell cultures

•Perform hands-on experiments with mammalian cell, applying design of Experiment (DOE) principles for process optimization and process parameter evaluation

•Perform routine cellular and molecular biology procedures such as RNA/DNA extractions, PCR, qPCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, and microscopy, with training if needed. 

•Keep accurate and detailed records of experiments and results

•Comply with standard laboratory practices and company policies


Collaboration, Communication, and Organizational Skills:

•Embrace a collaborative work environment through interactions with cross-functional teams, including software development, mechanical engineers, AI/ ML specialist and stem cell scientists.

•Demonstrate a bias for action with a “try it” approach.  

•Take full responsibility to resolve issues and tackle challenges 

•Ability to organize to meet project objectives and timelines

•Must be willing to take on occasional non-scientific responsibilities required to run the applications lab


Minimum Requirements

Qualifications and Educational Background:

•Authorization to work in the U.S. required.

•Masters or PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Stem Cell Biology, or related discipline with a minimum of 1-2 years of relevant industry/postdoc work experience OR a BS in a scientific discipline with 2-4 years direct lab experience, preferably working in an applications or support role for an industry suppler and/or services company serving the cell and gene therapy market.


Technical Skills and Experience:

•Must be excited to work at the intersection of biology, automation/AI with automated robotic instrumentation, imaging, novel software and a strong desire to learn by doing and to troubleshoot.

•Knowledge of statistical analysis tools and comfort with software used in laboratory settings 

•Familiarity with mammalian tissue culture techniques.

•Willingness to learn cellular, molecular, and biochemical assays to characterize stem cell culture (Flow cytometry, microscopy, RNA seq, etc.)

•General knowledge of the therapeutic drug development process strongly desired.


Communication/ Organization: 

•Must be comfortable working independently, taking on the responsibility of organizing and designing work plans to achieve stated goals.

•Critical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to design experiments and interpret data.

•Excellent organizational skills and a strong attention to detail.

•Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and ongoing projects.


The following are preferred, but not required:

•Knowledge of computational biology, bioinformatics and use of AI/ML and software tools to process large datasets.

•Familiarity with gene editing technologies and approaches

•Familiarity with transfecting mammalian cells

•Experience with iPSC reprogramming 

•Experience with programming
