Job Overview:

This position exercises leadership, technical assistance and general supervision, under applicable laws, rules and regulations in Indian Education to the education communities, agencies and the citizens of Montana within broad guidance and direction established by the Office of Public Instruction.This position has responsibility for providing professional development and materials development pertinent to implementing the law.The Specialist identifies needs in professional development in Indian Education for All among K-12 teachers in the State and prioritizes needs in conjunction with legislative intent, input from the MACIE, and criteria developed by OPI Indian Education Division staff.The Specialist research applicable models of professional development to promote the full implementation of the program and identifies partners for collaboration in the delivery of the professional development program.In the area of curriculum development, the Specialist reviews and evaluates curriculum, materials and resources that are culturally accurate and authentic related to Montana Content and Performance standards and the Essential Understandings regarding Montana Indians.The Specialist works collaboratively with school districts across the state in designing and implementing their plans for Indian Education for All.

·Knowledge of principles of effective teaching and learning.

·Knowledge of effective professional development, adult education.

·Knowledge of history and culture of Montana tribes.

·Knowledge to design effective presentations to groups on Indian Education issues.

·Skilled in leading a group discussion through organized processes.

·Ability to communicate a culturally responsive manner.

·Ability to write clearly and concisely

·Ability to work collaboratively and positively with other people.

·Ability to provide constructive and beneficial feedback on instructional issues.

·Ability to positively interact and build relationships with colleagues and other educators through active listening and demonstrating familiarity with educational issues.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience ):

·Bachelor's degree in K-12 education, curriculum and instruction, Native American studies.

·Three years of job-related experience in Indian Education, K-12 Teaching.

·Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
