Description

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Virginia DCJS certified Police Officer to serve as a School Resource Officer (SRO). The School Resource Officer is responsible for interacting with the police staff, school faculty, school administration and staff, parents, and students in the Roanoke City School system to lead and educate students, promote safety, and promote positive police/community relationships. The officer is responsible for one school in the Roanoke City school system. The officer serves as a law enforcement officer, teacher, role model, and counselor to and for the students The SRO works with diverse groups of people. A majority of the time is spent in environmentally controlled classroom settings, although assignment outdoors in various weather conditions may occur. Stressors in the assignment include interaction with openly hostile students or parents, requirements to meet deadlines, and the responsibility for a large number of students with a wide variety of concerns. The SRO is responsible for preventing, detecting, investigating, and prosecuting criminal violations on Roanoke City School property or events. The work hours for middle schools are 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and for high schools is 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and will follow the Roanoke City Public Schools calendar schedule. Work hours are subject to being flexed, which includes but is not limited to dances, athletic events, and shift extensions.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Teaching Duties
  • Model appropriate behavior for students, parents, and school employees
  • Follow authorized guidelines and provide appropriate documentation
  • Visit classes and teach the approved curriculum and other materials
  • Participate in lunch periods to establish rapport with students
  • Assist teachers with bus duty in the morning and in the afternoon
  • Maintain a teaching schedule maintained by the school system
Police Duties
  • Communicates with co-workers and supervisors
  • Maintain proficiency in law enforcement duties and capabilities
  • Operate police vehicle
  • Notify supervisor of any crime or safety issues in the workplace which is unusual or requires intervention
  • Completes incident reports
Counseling Duties
  • Practice active listening
  • Conduct confidential sessions with children
  • Deal effectively with special needs children
  • Deal effectively with incidents of truancy, neglect, discipline or relationship problems
  • Counsel students upon request or when requested by teachers in law-related areas
  • Maintains awareness of youth support and counseling services available in the community
  • Makes referrals as necessary
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be legally compliant to possess and certify with an issued handgun according to Virginia law.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Must have successfully completed basic law enforcement academy, the probationary period as police officer and be DJCS law enforcement certified in Virginia. SRO Certification preferred but not required. Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with a major in social or police science desirable but not required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with groups of customers or employees of organization. Fluency in Spanish is beneficial.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Current Virginia DCJS Certification.

Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services related trainings to obtain SRO certification will be provided if needed.
