The Instrumentation Craft Team Leader operates under the direction of the Instrument and Electrical Superintendent at the Borger Refinery. This role is primarily responsible for providing technical expertise to the craft team, performing QA/QC on field repairs, identifying and creating plans for closure of bad actors, and coordinating training opportunities with the training department.

Responsibilities May Include:
  • Provide safety leadership for the Instrumentation Group.
  • Serve as a resource for Instrument issues that arise, resolving questions and issues through and ensure techniques are aligned with plant reliability and safety standards.
  • Provide instruction to Instrument Techs to develop their skills regarding the operation and repair of instruments and provide a QA/QC of repairs.
  • Work with the Instrument & Electrical Craft Superintendent to provide personnel assignments to cover maintenance, TA and Project workload.
  • Ensure that systems are in place to provide high reliability of Instrumentation and actively work catalog of bad actor items.
  • Work to continuously improve the reliability of the plant's instrument systems and develop plans to replace obsolete equipment.
  • Identify areas of training and development of the plant's instrument technicians and work with Training Department to close gaps.
  • Convey the necessary skills/needs to Instrument Technicians and others to continuously improve their effectiveness.
  • Develop methods and systems for preserving maintenance records for each instrument and for making key information readily available to techs.
  • Provide leadership for instrumentation work for assigned turnaround events.
  • Perform regular probationary employee performance evaluation reviews.
  • Coordinate with the Instrument Planner the build-out of Bill of Material data for instrumentation in SAP and ensure that the appropriate spare parts are on-hand.
  • Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge and technical expertise regarding instrumentation and their application to plant equipment and processes.
  • Work closely with plant instrument engineers to develop, promote, and continuously upgrade the vision for the plant instrumentation infrastructure and reliability culture.
  • Identify materials and tools necessary for efficient Instrument maintenance and made available to craft.
  • Seek out and apply instrument best practices from other Company sites and from industry.
  • Serve as a resource for instrumentation questions, troubleshooting, and Root Cause Failure Analyses.
  • Provide maintenance and reliability input into new project designs.
  • Plant point of contact for identification, work assignments and mentor for Instrumentation Contractors.
  • Review current catalog of and develop preventative maintenance plans and schedules for instrumentation.

Required Qualifications:
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Highschool diploma or GED equivalent
  • 5 or more years of instrumentation maintenance experience
  • First Class Instrument Technician or equivalent experience
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
  • Travel up to 5% of the time
  • Occasional on-call duties
  • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Transport articles up to 50 pounds
  • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
  • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
  • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, and ear and eye protection)
  • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree
  • Ability to read and interpret P&ID's, instrument drawings, wiring diagrams, and ladder logic diagrams
  • Working knowledge of the regulatory maintenance, testing, and recordkeeping requirements for instrumentation
  • Expert knowledge of instrumentation through design, field installation, or maintenance experience
  • Ability to demonstrate skills required to install, configure, calibrate, test, and maintain instrumentation through hands-on instruction
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong customer interaction skills with experience in working with customers
  • Computer proficient with applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word
  • Excellent skill in oral/written communications, time management, and organization

The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally, and heavy sour crude oil produced in Canada, all of which are delivered by pipeline. Borger produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGLs and solvents. Refined products are distributed to customers via pipelines from the refinery to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
