The Instrumentation Craft Team Leader operates under the guidance of the Instrument and Electrical Superintendent at the Borger Refinery. This position is chiefly accountable for delivering technical guidance to the craft team, conducting quality assurance and quality control on field repairs, pinpointing and devising strategies for addressing recurring issues, and collaborating with the training department to facilitate skill development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Provide leadership in safety practices for the Instrumentation Group.
  • Act as a resource for Instrumentation-related inquiries, resolving challenges and ensuring that methods align with plant reliability and safety protocols.
  • Instruct Instrument Technicians to enhance their competencies in instrument operation and repair, while overseeing the quality of repairs.
  • Collaborate with the Instrument & Electrical Craft Superintendent to allocate personnel for maintenance, turnaround, and project tasks.
  • Establish systems to ensure high reliability of Instrumentation and actively manage a catalog of recurring issues.
  • Continuously strive to enhance the reliability of the plant's instrument systems and formulate plans for the replacement of outdated equipment.
  • Identify training needs for the plant's instrument technicians and work with the Training Department to address these gaps.
  • Communicate essential skills and requirements to Instrument Technicians and others to boost their efficiency.
  • Develop methods for maintaining accurate maintenance records for each instrument and ensure key information is easily accessible to technicians.
  • Lead instrumentation efforts during assigned turnaround events.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations for probationary employees.
  • Coordinate with the Instrument Planner to develop Bill of Material data for instrumentation in SAP and ensure the availability of necessary spare parts.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge and technical proficiency regarding instrumentation and its application to plant operations and processes.
  • Work closely with plant instrument engineers to develop, promote, and continuously enhance the vision for the plant's instrumentation infrastructure and reliability culture.
  • Identify required materials and tools for efficient Instrument maintenance and ensure their availability to the craft team.
  • Research and implement best practices for instrumentation from other company sites and the industry.
  • Serve as a resource for instrumentation troubleshooting and Root Cause Failure Analyses.
  • Provide maintenance and reliability insights for new project designs.
  • Act as the primary contact for identifying work assignments and mentoring Instrumentation Contractors.
  • Review existing catalogs and develop preventative maintenance plans and schedules for instrumentation.
Required Qualifications:
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 5 or more years of experience in instrumentation maintenance.
  • First Class Instrument Technician or equivalent experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Willingness and ability to comply with the following:
  • Travel up to 5% of the time.
  • Occasional on-call responsibilities.
  • Work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Transport items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machinery.
  • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet high.
  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases.
  • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat.
  • Work outdoors in challenging weather conditions.
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, and ear and eye protection).
  • Maintain a clean-shaven face for proper respirator/face mask sealing.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&ID's, instrument drawings, wiring diagrams, and ladder logic diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory maintenance, testing, and recordkeeping requirements for instrumentation.
  • Expertise in instrumentation through design, field installation, or maintenance experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills required to install, configure, calibrate, test, and maintain instrumentation through hands-on instruction.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Proficient in customer interaction with experience in client relations.
  • Computer proficiency with applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word.
  • Excellent oral/written communication, time management, and organizational skills.
