The Instrumentation Craft Leader operates under the guidance of the Instrument and Electrical Superintendent at the Borger Refinery. This position is primarily accountable for delivering technical guidance to the craft team, executing quality assurance and quality control on field repairs, identifying and devising strategies for addressing recurring issues, and coordinating training initiatives with the training department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership in safety for the Instrumentation Group.
  • Act as a resource for Instrumentation challenges that arise, resolving inquiries and ensuring practices align with plant reliability and safety standards.
  • Offer training to Instrument Technicians to enhance their skills in instrument operation and repair, along with performing QA/QC on repairs.
  • Collaborate with the Instrument & Electrical Craft Superintendent to allocate personnel for maintenance, turnaround, and project workloads.
  • Ensure systems are established to maintain high reliability of Instrumentation and actively manage a catalog of recurring issues.
  • Continuously strive to enhance the reliability of the plant's instrument systems and formulate plans for replacing outdated equipment.
  • Identify training and development needs for the plant's instrument technicians and work with the Training Department to address gaps.
  • Communicate essential skills and requirements to Instrument Technicians and others to enhance their effectiveness.
  • Develop methods and systems for maintaining maintenance records for each instrument and ensuring key information is easily accessible to technicians.
  • Lead instrumentation efforts for assigned turnaround events.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations for probationary employees.
  • Coordinate with the Instrument Planner to develop Bill of Material data for instrumentation in SAP and ensure the availability of necessary spare parts.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge and technical expertise regarding instrumentation and their application to plant equipment and processes.
  • Work closely with plant instrument engineers to develop, promote, and continuously enhance the vision for the plant's instrumentation infrastructure and reliability culture.
  • Identify materials and tools essential for efficient Instrument maintenance and ensure their availability to the craft team.
  • Research and implement best practices for instrumentation from other company sites and the industry.
  • Serve as a resource for instrumentation inquiries, troubleshooting, and Root Cause Failure Analyses.
  • Provide maintenance and reliability insights into new project designs.
  • Act as the primary contact for identifying work assignments and mentoring Instrumentation Contractors.
  • Review the current catalog and develop preventative maintenance plans and schedules for instrumentation.
Required Qualifications:
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 5 or more years of experience in instrumentation maintenance.
  • First Class Instrument Technician or equivalent experience.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Willingness and ability to comply with the following:
  • Travel up to 5% of the time.
  • Occasional on-call duties.
  • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Transport items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machinery.
  • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height.
  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases.
  • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat.
  • Work outdoors in harsh weather conditions.
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, and ear and eye protection).
  • Maintain a clean-shaven face daily to ensure proper sealing of respirators/face masks.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&ID's, instrument drawings, wiring diagrams, and ladder logic diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory maintenance, testing, and recordkeeping requirements for instrumentation.
  • Expert knowledge of instrumentation through design, field installation, or maintenance experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills required to install, configure, calibrate, test, and maintain instrumentation through hands-on instruction.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong customer interaction skills with experience in working with customers.
  • Computer proficiency with applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word.
  • Excellent skills in oral/written communication, time management, and organization.
